ICC Profile Invalid after update, need list of solutions to take

Using Dell, I got the ICC Profile invalid message first when trying to correct Photoshop’s color, I fixed it by moving the folders containing the color settings. When I updated Photoshop April or May, I realized I need to add gamma to my blend, but when I do that, I got the message again. Give me the list of solutions to take. I know solutions have been posted online but I’m lazy.

Dave and D. Fosse are right,

making ANY changes to the hardware display state invalidates the icc profile for the screen, so if you do that your accuracy is gone.

If you change the brightness, or any other monitor control such as contrast , colour etc, then your ICC monitor profile is immediately invalid. It is of course possible to make two profiles each describing the monitor at different monitor brightness settings but that would involve switching them at Operating system level before opening Photoshop

If you find the display apearance is too bright after calibration / profiling you perhaps selected a white luminance that’s too high. Think of a luminance that visually matches paper white and try reducing luminance target in the Spyder software until you achieve that. Perhaps start at around 120 CDm2 .

So I calibrated with the SpyderX and it worked, but how do I embed the profile to Dell Premier Color?

Don't do anything!

The profile made by the Spyder is set up at system level automatically. Photoshop finds the profile there and uses it without any intervention from you.

Under no circumstances should the monitor profile be used at document level. This is a standard profile conversion from the document profile (sRGB, Adobe RGB etc) and into your monitor profile. The result of that conversion is sent to your monitor. Both these profiles are needed, and they need to be in their proper places.

There is one basic requirement for a monitor profile: it needs to be an accurate description of the monitor's current and actual behavior. You get the most out of it by setting the monitor to its full, native gamut. Not any of the presets, Adobe RGB or otherwise; they only serve to limit the unit's capabilities. Change any setting in the monitor, and the profile is invalidated and you need to make a new one.

I need to switch from my calibrated profile to a darkened sRGB profile.

I use the calibrated profile for watching things and doing Adobe.

But I use the darkened sRGB profile for everything else because the brightness and vibrant color will strain my eyes.

Looks like your monitor display profile is corrupted.

Leave the Dell settings on defaults

And, yes, you really need a calibrator to get decent results fro a wide gamut screen.

Display profile issues

At least once a week on this forum we read about this, or very similar issues of appearance differing between applications.

Unfortunately, with Microsoft hardware: Windows updates, Graphics Card updates and Display manufacturers have a frustratingly growing reputation for installing useless (corrupted) monitor display profiles.

I CAN happen with Macs but with far less likelyhood, it seems.

The issue can affect different applications in different ways, some not at all, some very badly.

The poor monitor display profile issue is hidden by some applications, specifically those that do not use colour management, such as Microsoft Windows "Photos".

Photoshop is correct, it’s the industry standard for viewing images, in my experience it's revealing an issue with the Monitor Display profile rather that causing it. Whatever you do, don't ignore it. As the issue isn’t caused by Photoshop, don’t change your Photoshop ‘color settings’ to try fix it.

If you want to rule out pretty much the only issue we ever see with Photoshop, you can reset preferences, I never read of a preferences issue causing this problem though:

Note: Make sure that you back up all your custom presets, brushes & actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences. Migrate presets, actions, and settings

To find out if this is the issue, (s you have a wide gamut monitor) I recommend you to try setting the monitor profile for your own monitor display under “Device” in your Windows ‘color management’ control panel to AdobeRGB. You can ADD AdobeRGB if its not already listed.

And be sure to check “Use my settings for this device”.

(OR, if you have a standard gamut monitor display (check the spec online) it’s better to try sRGB instead).

Quit and relaunch Photoshop after the control panel change, to ensure the new settings are applied.

If this change fixes the issue, it is recommended that you should now calibrate and profile the monitor properly using a calibration sensor like i1display pro, which will create and install it's own custom monitor profile. The software should install it’s profile correctly so there should be no need to manual set the control panel once you are doing this right.

Depending on the characteristics of your monitor display and your requirements, using sRGB or Adobe RGB here may be good enough - but custom calibration is a superior approach.

That sounds like you got a bad display profile from Dell.

All you needed to do was replace that profile with a good one. You do that on system level. You don't involve Photoshop - it just uses the display profile it gets from the operating system.

If you don't have a calibrator to make a new profile, you use the generic profile closest to your monitor's characteristics. Usually that means sRGB IEC61966-2.1.

Don't change anything in Photoshop's color settings. That's not where the problem is. Change it back if you have.

If your monitor is wide gamut, you need to get a proper calibrator like an i1 Display Pro or a Spyder. No wide gamut monitor should ever be sold without one.

You also need to use color managed software only. You cannot use applications that don't support full color management, they will never display correctly on a wide gamut monitor. This is the deal you implicitly accept when purchasing such a unit.

The calibrator will take care of everything. You just set your choice for white point and black point, and run the software. That's it. The software will set the profile up on system level, and Photoshop will find it and use it without any further intervention from the user.

As Dave points out, there is only one requirement for a monitor profile: it needs to accurately describe the monitor's actual and current behavior. The profile is a map, it has to correspond to the actual terrain.

I suggest that to get some effective help you need to be slightly less "lazy" and post some useful information.

1. Start with a screenshot of your colour settings.

2. Give us some information about your version of Photoshop and your system (if you are not sure, go to Photoshop >Help >System info and press copy - then paste the info here)

3. Describe exactly what document profile you are using when you get the error message (if in doubt post the document)

I have no idea what you mean by "I realized I need to add gamma to my blend" but if you have checked Blend RGB colours using Gamma, then uncheck it. In normal use that should not be checked.

Forget playing with those Dell settings, what is important is that your monitor ICC profile, set in Windows settings, describes your monitor. Follow the advice posted by D.Fosse.
