About DW Templates and editing pages (from a beginner)

Hi,

A long time ago I made a site and a template. Now I want to make a change on a few pages but they are locked by the template.  I can not figure out (or forgot) how to edit the template  -  so I made a copy of the template which I could edit and renamed it back to the original name.  Now I want to make template changes occur on all the child pages  - how??

Hi @e rn7284933,

  • How long ago?
  • Which version of DW did you use to build your old site?
  • Which version of DW do you have today?

I ask because it might be more prudent to start over fresh with a modern responsive layout that works on ALL devices instead of trying to resurrect an old one from the past.

I'm not a huge fan of Dreamweaver templates because I think they cause more problems than they solve.  Server-side includes are better for managing sitewide elements like common headers, footers and navigation.   See link below for details.

Unfortunately, DW Templates don't work in other code editors because they are proprietary to DW.

I advise you to avoid cloning templates... (make backups if necessary).

So directly, edit the template. That is the file that is in the TEMPLATES folder (located at the root of the site) and which has the extension .dwt

so once you edit the template, all the child page should automaticaly update. you should also have a dilog box informing you about the process.

from the assets panel (windows > Assets), you have on the left side different icons, one is a template access (second one from the bottom), and now from the top right of the panel, you'll get a dropdown menu allowing you different process, as apply the template  or recreate the list of template... (helpfull sometimes)

when you select and open a child template, you'll get from the menu tools > template, the possibility to detach the child from the master template
