Avoiding Destructive Sync

I have just upgraded today from Dreamweaver CC 2017.2 to 2017.5 in hopes that an issue I've experienced for the past 3-4 days will go away, but I don't think the version of Dreamweaver is the issue. Beginning Monday or Tuesday files began "disappearing" from sites on our server. At first I figured we had been hacked, but our server IT guy can find no evidence of our system being penetrated, so I began searching for Dreamwever CC deleting remote files when using Sync. I figured I may have turned on some automatic Sync feature and Dreamweaver was deleting remote files when I was not aware. I haven't seen anything to indicate Dreamweaver has any automated sync tool that would do this, so I assume I must be activating Sync and furthermore somehow I must be indicating somehow that remote files should be deleted, or missing a dialogue box asking me before Dreamweaver deletes remote files and accidentally hitting ENTER at the right time moment where I did not see the prompt for deletion and the files get deleted.

  1. I don't desire and haven't purposely used Sync since a long time ago (like 2-ish yrs ago when I started with CC)
  2. I do not want to use Sync
  3. I may sometimes hit the Synchronize with Remote Server button since its location is where the Refresh button used to be on older version and is visually very similar
  4. Because of 1-3 above I have gone into Edit > Preferences > Sync Settings and unchecked all items under Settings to Syn and Enable Sync and Import Sync Settings above that are also unchecked.

Is there anything else I should be aware of to accidentally avoid running a Sync besides unchecking all of these items in #4 above?

Will unchecking all of the items in #4 above prevent any remote or local file deletions in the case that I do accidentally click the Synchronize with Remote Server button again?

Any other ideas?

To change your actual Site Synchronize settings...

1. Click the fly out menu in the upper right of the Files window

2. Click Site > Synchronize
3. Make sure "Delete remote files not on local drive" is NOT checked (I forgot this was an option)

That should stop it, if it was the synchronize button that's causing your issue.

Thanks for pointing out I've got the wrong Sync settings, Jon. I'll skip trying to switch to Ctrl + Shift + U/D since I've been using DW for so long clicking Put/Get would be a hard habit to break.

I will check the "Delete remote files not on local drive" settings tomorrow at work where I am having the issue. Are these settings on a per website basis or global for Dreamweaver? I'll probably find out tomorrow AM at work.

I'm not sure if it's set per-site setting or not.

None of mine have ever had that box checked.

I'm guessing since it's a File window option, it probably applies to all sites with a single change, but I could be wrong. I'm not willing to turn it on to test it, sometimes playing with settings like that will have unexpected results.

The Sync Settings you changed are for program settings between multiple machines via the Cloud, not for uploading to your server.

I'm not sure the synchronize button is responsible for this either, but the easiest way to never hit it, is to use the default keyboard shortcuts available for uploading/downloading.

I haven't clicked a Put or Get arrow in years because these two are so second-nature to me...

Ctrl + Shift + U = Put (Upload)
Ctrl + Shift + D = Get (Download)
