i am currently using sha1 and md5, but have read that md5 is no longer reliable. what do you guys/gals suggest as an alternative?

Who says it is no longer reliable?

We have to face it, no matter what the encryption used, it can be broken if
someone is determined enough to want to. You can only do as best you can.
