I suggest to check these books from Shelley Powers. They offer a good
balance, not too advanced but not "for dummies" either. The author has a
pleasant writing style too:

Hi Massimo

I don't have a specific goal for Spry/Ajax I'm just interest in what can be achieved (and how to achieve it). As a freelance web designer I'm driven by what my customers require so I'd like some insight into these new(ish) tools.

To date I use Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop to create my webpages. A couple of years ago I used Ajax to dynamicly load images from a list (as an exercise) but I've not had an occasion to use Ajax reciently.

As for writing JavaScript, I'm reasonably comfortable, not an expert but happy to 'have a go'

As far as I know there aren't dedicated books on Spry, only books on
Dreamweaver that cover Spry among other topics.

There are instead plenty of books on Ajax, many of them, publishers
typically rushed to cover this market and the results are very mixed.

In order to collect good suggestions you should tell us more about your
goals, background and technical skills. How do you plan to use spry/Ajax? Do
you have programming experience? Are you comfortable writing custom
JavaScript code?
