At User Manual Page 596

Open an ASP page in Dreamweaver, then open the Databases panel (Window > Databases).

3. Click the Plus button on the panel and select Data Source Name (DSN) from the menu.

4. Enter a name for the new connection, without spaces or special characters.

5. Select Using DSN On Testing Server.

Note: Macintosh users can ignore this step because all database connections use DSNs on the application server.

6. Enter the DSN or click the DSN button to connect to the server and select the DSN for the database you want, then complete the options.

7. Complete the User Name and Password boxes.

but on step 3, i cannot click on the + button (the pop up window selections are all dimmed)

If you're working in an ASP NET environment, why aren't you using a Microsoft product that supports it?

Dreamweaver is mainly for PHP / MySQL developers.   You'll get no support  for ASP NET / MS SQL connections unless you purchase a 3rd party extension from DMX Zone.  See link below for details.

Also to add to the reply by Ben M.

The database extension and the support for .net in Dw are for the very old versions of .net, (pre 2004) since then many functions for .net have been updated/depreciated/removed so the extensions, (or features if using an old version of Dw) should not be used for modern .net.

What is the extension of the page you are working in? And is it saved within the defined site?
