IMO, you're better off using Brackets.  At least it recognizes modern code.   CS3 which released in 2007 is so old, it doesn't know what HTML5 is.

Brackets - A modern, open source code editor that understands web design.

Thanks, well I'm getting parallels for another reason (need Windows), but also read how some people use old OS Mac precisely for this type of issue.. old versions of Final Cut etc. for example

I still use CS3. I gon't a hoot about CSS or any of other bloviated features of DW.  Though I would love a current copy, as web preview and few other things are better, I''m not yet ready to have another gauging monthly/ yearly bill from Adobe.

I had another thread on DW backups, and nothing was good: all mediocre compared to DW (wrappler was best, still not great)

That said, What is the closest Mac OS to the CS3 release date that will work with Parallels and how do I obtain it and install it?

Thanks for help! Appreciate this.

You would need the original disc or image file to do this.  There is no way to buy a copy of a 12 year old operating system that I am aware of.

This would be around the Leopard/Snow Leopard era.  The latter is for the Intel processors when they switched from PPC to Intel.  However, per Parallels KB, per Apple EULA, you are not allowed to run those operating systems' on Parallels ( Knowledge Base ).  You might be able to try Lion on Parallels, but no guarantees on a version that old.

CS3 System Requirements:

  Macintosh

  • PowerPC® G4 or G5 or Intel processor
  • Mac OS X 10.4.8
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 2GB of available hard disk space
  • DVD-ROM drive
  • 1024x768 monitor resolution with 16-bit or greater video card

CS3 activation servers were taken offline.  You will need a new installer and serial number that doesn't require activation.  And when prompted to register your product, say NO NEVER REGISTER because those servers are also gone .  See correct answer below for for details.
