CUT and PASTE image CS4

I am using CS4 Photoshop and Dreamweaver on a Mac running 10.7.5.   Following instructions in Adobe's Classroom in a Book for Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 p 95 I opened a provided psd image in PS, selected a part of one layer with the rectangular selection tool, and hit Copy.  In  a DW document I went to hit Paste, as directed, and found the command greyed out.  Flattening the psd document, or converting it to JPG or png format made no difference.   I can copy/paste text between PS and DW (or TextEdit for that matter) but not images.

I would appreciate some help with this important operation.

CS4 is 10 years old and modern workflows have changed a lot since your book was published.

I've been using DW and PS for a very long time and have never used the copy & paste method you describe.   I always optimize images for the web in PS first then save in my DW local site folder.  See screenshots.

Photoshop's legacy Save for Web, 4 Up panel.  Choose a preset or adjust quality value to give a smaller file size.

In DW, your saved images can be dragged & dropped from the Files Panel into your document's Design View.

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions.  Yes, my CS4 is 10 years old, but it's all I have right now.

Nancy, your suggested work-around gets the job done, but has more steps and is more time consuming than a simple cut and paste procedure. A benefit in your suggestion, however,  is that web optimization is introduced.  

One might have thought that anything suggested in detail in a book sold by Adobe (Classroom in a Book) would work as advertised.  Apparently not.

One would.  But PSD files are not supported on the web.  So I'm guessing your chapter is discussing linked smart objects.

Working with Photoshop and Dreamweaver

DW is a poor graphics generator.  Likewise, PS is a poor code generator.   It's best to use graphics apps for images only.  Use DW to generate your code.   A few extra steps will make a big difference in your final product.

This isn't an answer to your question, but I think it would make more sense for you to save the extracted portion in Photoshop and then import it into Dreamweaver. While it is possible that such a workflow exists, I am not sure if it is ideal.
