Question

Developers snubbed by CS3

Watched the webcast – uninispired delivery aside, the Dreamweaver segment was hugely disappointing. Sadly my DW wish-list was largely ignored. No developer toolset - nothing. A few AJAX widgets with SPRY, as expected, but nothing else. No integrated server behaviours; no mention of the Interakt Kollection extension Adobe bought last year. I can hear the collective sigh of a hundred thousand hopeful developers. Thanks for nothing, Adobe.

Say it isn't so...

Excellent! And can I have pages, on the same site, that have some interakt elements (for instance the CSS menus) and some ADDT elements? Or can the two not mix?

well, as none of Interakt´s now discontinued extensions (incl. the CSS menus) are compatible with ADDT/CS3, I´d suggest playing absolutely safe and not mix it. You can well update sites with ADDT which have been *exclusively* built with Kollection 3.7.1 and the PHP_MySQL server model, but beyond that - no

as for KTML, is it purely abandonned or will it/could it be maintained by other people than adobe ?

I think that many solution have integrated this nice editor and lots of people will be very disapointed just for being not supported on the new CS3. It could be great if a community can take the dev on it further on

I've heard that the 2 installations, DW8 and DW CS3 have to be on different machines. Is that correct?

who said *that* ? certainly not, and I have CS3 and DW MX2004 running on the same machine without problems. CS3 uses it´s own configuration folder anyway, so there will be no conflicts with e.g. the DW8 configuration and extensions.

You would have to have 2 installations of DW, one of 8 and the other of CS3. If you update the includes folder in CS3, KTML will no longer work.

aside from spry's what and the fact that the developers kit will only work with CS3 what added functionality & features will one get for upgrading to the Developers Toolskit.

Not trying to be a wise guy here but I've looked at the link David Alcala provided and although the information was more a Press release I didn't see a actual features & functions list - will a more detailed spec sheet be available shortly ?

Thanks

a list of MXKollection components which are available in Adobe Dreamweaver Developer Toolbox (ADDT) can be found here

Hi all,

KTML
We cannot use it. I know. We cannot create KTML textfields using Dreamweaver CS3. Ok.

My question is:

If I use the new Developer Toolbox and upload the includes folder, how should I proceed in a way that my EXISTING KTML pages still work?

I have a site, I will use CS3 and Developer Toolbox, no prob. But I'd like to know how it will handle the existing pages that have KTML inside.

Thanks

Info is now available on Adobe Dreamweaver Developer Toolbox (formerly known
as Kollection):

You must be confused. The new developers toolbox will have less features than the current Kollection. XML datasets is a part of spry which is integrated with DW, not the new Kollection, aka "Developers Toolbox". Captchas are currently a part of the kollection already and is nothing new, but only available for the PHP server model. KTML is not included in the new developers toolbox which is a huge loss, and CSS menus is not included. Several other features are missing as well which are currently available in the Kollection, but will NOT be available in the new Kollection which will be known as the Developers Toolbox.

Why would someone want to pay hundreds of dollars to upgrade to CS3, then not be able to use all the extensions they purchased for DW8 because they are not compatible? Thats more wasted money. Then pay hundreds more for the developers toolbox which has less features that Kollection currently has and is not even backwards compatible with DW8. Doesn't make sense.

Less features than it already had?

Actually it has more. XML Datasets and Capchas to login forms just to name a couple significant ones. I do agree though that many people will be putting off upgrading because of the fact the rest of thier extensions that they paid big money for have become useless. But as far as Kollection goes its actually a little better than the old one.

What features have you heard are removed from it?

The biggest loss is the lack of other DB's than MySQL - the PHPAdoDB model is being dropped, so if you were using MSSQL(like me!:) and PHP, you're in the dark now. Admittedly, i've been using my own code for db queries of late, but there's a lot of older code that runs just fine that i'd like to be able to update. The PHAKT extension was a great tool, and although it was free, it is going away as well, along with the Kollection. CSS menus is going away, but that's handled by the new menus in DW, so fine. KTML is going away, which is just stupid. It's a very good product and could have been really amazing teamed with the new ajaxy goodness of DW CS3. It feels like Adobe saw Kollection as a threat to their vision, and so killed off as much as they could, while making a few bucks.

It may have a future but a very slim one. It is not integrated into DW CS3. It will not contain many features that already exist in Kollection. KTML is going away. You still won't be able to use any of your other Interakt extensions. Some features will only support PHP and no other languages. Oh, and it is going to be called something else which will only be available on the Adobe store. Still no reason to upgrade, especially since older, discontinued, extensions will not be compatible. Money down the drain.

are you really able to predict that ?

MXKollection was also not "integrated" in e.g. DW8 -- it´s been an external extension before, it´s just that now, and noone ever made any promises that this would be any different. If the new "Kollection" were actually integrated, the general sales price would certainly rise to an extent which makes CS3 less interesting to those customers who don´t need those features

>>

Maybe you expect too much at this very early stage, as the developers were totally busy with producing a CS3 compatible version

KTML is going away.

that´s admittedly a loss !

..which mostly have discontinued at a very early stage (last year), and I think that this also serves as signal saying "don´t expect anything from us relared to these products". just my 2ct

>>
Oh, and it is going to be called something else...
>>
is the name as such really important ?

>>
... which will only be available on the Adobe store
>>
now that Interakt has become Adobe Romania respectively the new version is getting produced by folks which are getting paid by Adobe for doing this, the new product expectedly belongs to Adobe, and it´s clear that the distribution channel also changes accordingly IMHO

>>
Still no reason to upgrade, especially since older, discontinued, extensions will not be compatible.

yes, that makes it complicated.

I also used almost all of InterAKT's extensions extensively and was quite upset about the buyout at first (well, still am to a point) but I would think that Adobe bought InterAKT out for a reason and I doubt it would be to put them out of business. It may be a bit premature to decide not to upgrade to DW9 at this point as we don't know the future plans.

But I will agree that with the buyout and discontinuation of InterAKT's tools (they had thousands of users) they have potentially restricted the number of users who will upgrade. Upgrading to lose functionality is not something people who rely on it to feed the family will do.

But I am willing to see what they have up their sleeve before we start planning a public hanging at town square. We'll know soon enough.
