Doctype [was: Help]

I'm a very novice user of Dreamweaver and am trying to correct error codes such as doctype must be declared. What is a doctype?

    The document type declaration is on the first line of your document code.

    <!doctype html>

    <html lang="en-US">

    <head>

    <meta charset="utf-8">

    <title>Untitled Document</title>

    </head>

    <body>

         CONTENT GOES HERE

    </body>

    </html>

    Im surprised no one has suggested an extension, yet. That would negate any problem of wanting to know what a doctype is or what its used for in the eyes of many.
