Question

dreamweaver cs4 crashes constantly

previously used dreamweaver 8 on this same computer with no major headaches. upgraded to dreamweaver cs4, and I get crashes all the time. no pattern to the crashes.

sometimes, adding a new folder to the site will cause it to crash (but not always).

sometimes trying to navigate the remote site will cause dreamweaver cs4 to crash.

sometimes looking at the screen will cause it to crash.

anyone else having the same sorts of trouble? i might be ready to switch to zend studio.

    I have Dreamweaver CS4. I previously had CS3. I have a MAC G5, OS 10.5.

My Dreamweaver crashes all the time. In fact, it crashes almost everytime I use it. And no, it's not the computer. This is a new screaming fast machine, for one. Secondly, I just upgraded to CS4, and it crashes the same way, so it's not a corrupt configuration file.

I work on remote servers, and I edit directly on the server, which means I'm using dreamweaver's ftp site connections. When the ftp site times out, and you try and click on a file, or save a file after the site has timed out, Dreamweaver will hang. If you try and close Dreamweaver, it will continue to poll the remove site and then goes into hang mode and you have to force close it. I can't think of a single time Dreamweaver closed correctly. It ALWAYS crashes every time I use it. And it's the ftp thing. It can't deal with ftp well. I was hoping CS4 would fix it, but it's the same as CS3. And looking at all the comments here, I'm not the only one, and it's not the computer. Dreamweaver is the only program that hangs on my MAC, and it does it without fail, every single time I work on a remote site. It's inevitable that I'll work on something else, and forget it for a half hour. Once that site has timed out, it's force close or nothing. When I am working on a site I have to remember to save about every five minutes to keep the connection alive so it won't crash.

If I understand everything I have been told, you should not be editing files directly on the server. You should have a local site, where you build and edit your files. When they are finished, then you upload to the server. The two must stay in sync.

Well I develop locally and upload to update as you suggest and I have constant FTP issues working locally or remotely. Even with the same FTP settings, FileZilla will work fine during Dreamweaver's thick moments.

    Hi Jamie and others,

I've just discovered this thread after experiencing the file treecrashing problem with DW CS4 in the last few days. I never really started to notice it until recently beginning a big site redevelopment requiring many check out/opening/saving/check in operations daily. Probably had 20+ crashes yesterday alone. Running XP SP2 on a Lenovo Thinkpad W500. I've done the whole reinstall, delete the config file, etc. runaround with no improvement.

Jamie, did you find any resolution from Adobe on your request for support? Any further suggestions welcomed!

Joan, sounds like you and I are having very similar problems. Mine started when I enabled my site to use Contribute which requires the check in/out function to be activated. I still don't have a solution. I just save a lot.

    Hi Kim,

I'm not running Contribute, so that doesn't seem to be contributing (ha ha) to my problem.

This may sound crazy/silly, but today I am having luck with the following procedure. When I want to access a particular file in a particular directory in the file tree, I click once on the name of the directory in the file tree view, essentially activating that directory. Then I click on the little "+" button to open the directory view. If the directory is already displayed as open, I still click on the name of the directory first, taking me into that space, before double clicking on a file to open it. So far today, with modifying ~20 files, I have not yet had a crash. Does that explanation make sense?

    And yes, saving often.

I got sick of this, so I just made the switch to Netbeans http://www.netbeans.org/. It's totally free, and offers a better ftp or subversion integration. There a few lacking features, but I know that Netbeans is being furiously developed, and I like it much better than any other IDE out there.

Probably not going back to DW which I have been using for over 6 years. Adobe ruined the product, and there's obviously no bug fixing going on any more.

    So long.

    August 10, 2009

I've had a quick look, Netbeans is without a doubt fantastic. I was surprised at the wealth of features, including built-in MySQL DBA support, which is an application in its own right! This is probably aimed more at the coder than the designer which suites my needs.

I can't work out how to get code hinting to work automatically for PHP though. In DW if you type "fopen(" for example, you'll get a tooltip - not in Netbeans for some strange reason. You have to go to Source > Show Method Parameters each time. Although it does do it for class methods when you create them!?

More importantly I haven't yet worked out how to setup the equivalent of a remote site with check in/out facilities without setting up CVS/Subversion. Adopting them is probably the future anyway rather than relying on a proprietry system like DW uses.

...It also seems to be missing the "Netbeans has stopped responding" crash screen that Dreamweaver sports. Perhaps they will add it in future versions.

Thanks so much!  It's early in the morning but you have already made my day. Every time it crashes today I'll think of that line and chuckle.

My boss needed to use Dreamweaver at home the other night. He informs me that it was really annoying him because it crashed many times when using the file tree.

I'm waiting on a response from Adobe Support. Initial response was, have you tried reinstalling it / working through the KB article they created.

Will post the next response here.

go and delete the winfilecache .dat file. In 90 % this will solve the issue.

The cache file is located on widows vista at:

    C:\Users\[user_name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver 9\Configuration

    In XP ist should be:

    C:\Documents & Settings\[user_name]\Application Data\Adobe\Dreamweaver 9\Configuration

The file will actually be called something like WinFileCache-[some string of letters and numbers].dat

Also, delete all site cache and rebuild the site.

    Hi Mike

Thanks for your suggestions, but as you will see above I've already tried removing the entire configuration folder that houses this file as well as re-installations over many different machines and operating systems.

I've currently got an adobe support case open - which has been pending their response since 17th July while it is escalated to a senior level.

    Regards

    Jamie.

CS4 has been about the same for us as well. We've tried it using XP Pro and Tablet only, but on several different computers and laptops with the same lock-up results. Have not been able to find any application conflicts. We've tried it on: a custom Abit Workstation, a custom Tyan Workstation, a custom MSI computer, Dell Dim 9150, a Dell Precision M2300 laptop, Compaq V2000 Laptop, a Toshiba Satelite Tablet (XP-tablet).

Every installation has had major lockup problems. Several were on new OS installs. Same results whether it's a totally fresh install or 2 - 3 years of use. None of these have any plugins installed. Only message in error log is faulting module dreamweaver.exe.

Would love to figure out what's causing the problems. In our experience even the most recent version is Beta at best. Which means CS5 will probably be out in a week or two .

anytime you start getting a lot of crashes, the first place to look is your extensions.  sometimes extensions are not compatible with the version of dreamweaver you're using, or is only partly compatible, and will cause problems.  remove all of your extensions to see if the problem still exists, and then add them back one at a time.

Hi Jon - thanks, I just tried this and still had an almost immediate crash. I've also disabled most non-critital services and proccesses under XP. I have noticed it tends to crash when I'm using the file manager, opening folders and the like, although not exclusively. Also, when it does hang, my computer slows to crawl until I kill it. On the other hand, DW 8 continues to hum along fine.

if you have both 8 and cs4 installed at the same time, that could be causing a problem.  i also wouldn't advise running both at once, if that's possible, because that would likely cause a problem as well.

if you have any kind of virus software running, turn it off.  sometimes those kind of softwares can cause a lot of issues with programs.

I guess last ditch effort would be to remove both 8 and cs4 completely from your computer, reboot, defrag, and reinstall cs4 only with no extensions installed.

If you're still having a problem, then you could have some much larger issues going on, like a hard drive going bad or a corrupt operating system.

thank you, adobe, for not fixing CS4. i love the crashes. there is a buddhist calm that overwhelms me when dreamweaver stops responding to my clicks and gracelessly crashes. looking forward to CS5, 6, 7, and so on - all of which i'll be sure to read about while using my Zend Studio.

    June 8, 2009

Yes, all the time. In fact, 43 crashes between 21st May - 08th June including 4 this morning.

Always seems to happen when navigating around the file tree when you have a remote site setup.

I've tried this on XP SP3 and Vista SP1 and SP2. Can't find anything about this. Either no one is using CS4 or we have a unique situation going on.

IMO DW is just buggy. The only reason I wanted to upgrade to CS4 was in the hope that the FTP and sync features would actually speed up and be more stable. Just ended up with a worse product than CS3. I'm supposed to be doing some web dev at the moment and I'm just spending my time again searching for solutions to this product. My nan could have written a better application and sadly she is no longer with us.

If Dreamweaver is behaving in an odd way, it frequently means you have a corrupt personal configuration folder.

Close Dreamweaver, locate the personal configuration folder, and rename it. When you restart Dreamweaver, it should create a new configuration folder with all the program defaults. For details of how to find the configuration folder, see this page in the Dreamweaver FAQ.

You may want to take a look at all the fixed listed in that particular FAQ - and see if any of those may help as well.

I have already tried removing my configuration folder. I am well versed in doing so as it was necessary to rectify many of the bugs in CS3!

For your information, I've also re-formatted my laptop and installed XP SP2, then re-formatted and installed Vista SP1 then re-formatted and installed Vista SP2. The problem still remains. I have even tried a different laptop. I'm running all up to date service packs, drivers and software. My colleague had the same issue running on a PC. I also uninstalled any AntiVirus software I was running in a last desperate attempt.

Forgive my frustration, but I don't get paid to troubleshoot or beta test Adobe's products and unfortunatley, it's not comercially viable to continue running a software application which crashes 6 times a day. I will no doubt be forced to investigate an alternative product.

I'm up to 44 crashes since 21st May 09 and counting (some of which have occured since my last post this morning)...
