Dreamweaver Settings

So I tried to create just a basic index.html page using Dreamweaver with practically nothing in it except TEST in the body. It looks fine. However, when I uploaded it to where I thought my files needed to go, and I type in my website, it gives me a 404. My hosting company gave me a sample index.html file to test it with and, with that index.html file, which, I think, they just used notepad, I put my index.html file in the same spot.

Is there a setting in Dreamweaver that I'm missing? Thanks.

Oh and I used FileZilla to upload my index.html.

Your server is configured to show the default home page until you upload one to your ROOT directory.

As to which links to use, I use Document relative so I can preview in my local browser without issue.  But either one will work on the remote server.

It's hard to say with the info provided...

An html file is an html file though. They're all just text that browsers render into websites. There's nothing special or different about a DW or a notepad file, if they're both saved with a .html extension.

404 typically means the page wasn't uploaded to the correct location (easy if the root directory isn't set correctly when defining your site in DW) or, it's possible the page wasn't saved as "index.html", but some other name not recognized by the server as a home page name.

Have you properly Defined your site in DW, with the correct root folder location?

Thanks @Jon Fritz  and @Nancy OShea . I forgot to define the root directory. It's just weird because the file is in the same place as the dummy index that they gave me. Now the question is, should the Links be relative to the Document or Site root? Thanks.

    Thanks.

    1. Name your home page index.html (all small case).  Some servers are cAsE sEnSiTiVe.

    2. Did you define your local site folder and enter your server's S/FTP log-in credentials and Root Directory?  Site > New Site...

Your index page typically resides within a publicly accessible Root Directory on your server.  Root Directory varies by hosting plan.  If unsure what settings to to use, ask your hosting provider.   See screenshot.

    3. After uploading, hard refresh your browser to see changes (Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + R).

    Hope that helps.
