Question

DW 2021 Live View tag selection automatically expanding to parent element

Hi,

I am using DreamWeaver version 21.2 build 15523.  I am a beginner and am trying to follow along with the examples in the book "Adobe Dreamweaver 2021 Version - Classroom in a Book".

I am having a hard time with a few of the examples because when I try to select certain elements in "Live" view, DreamWeaver seems to automatically "expand" the selection to the element that contains the element I am trying to select (rather than the item I am trying to select).

For example, right now I have a <table> element inside a <div> element. The instructions in the book say (in Live View) to select the <table> tag to bring up the Element Display for the <table> element. When I do this, I see the Element Display appear briefly for the <table> element (maybe not even for a second) only to then disappear. After this happens, the Element Display re-appears and is attached to the containing <Div> element.

I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.  I am wondering if anyone can tell me if this behavior makes it sound like I might have an incorrect setting or prefernce set on my system?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

Validate your code and fix reported errors.

Window > Results > Validation.  Click the triangle to check document.

See screenshot.  Switch to Design view from the Document Toolbar or use Ctrl + Shift + F11 to toggle.

Design view is not as accurate at rendering CSS as Live view but it's better for working with table cell data.

Also, tables should never be used for primary layouts.  They are for charts and spreadsheets (tabular data) only.

    Thanks Nancy,

As you suggested, I found that Design View definitely made it easier for me to get through the table formatting exercises in the book.  This allowed me make it through the chapter I was working on.  I'll keep pushing through.  I appreciate your help!

    Best regards,
