Employee Directory on Website

Application: Dreamweaver CC 2017

I can usually handle myself pretty well with HTML and CSS but I will be honest that I am still struggling with some of the other programming for websites. With that said, I have a need that I can't figure out.

My company website needs to have an online employee directory. The desire is that the end user can choose from a drop down menu the department they want and then the employees who are in that department will be displayed (a picture, bio and contact information for each person) in a list.

My guess is that I need a PHP page with a database behind it that has the information in it and then JavaScript on the page to pull it. Again, this is me just trying to guess.

Can anyone provide some insight on this? To be honest, I don't know enough to write the code for this (or at least I don't think I do).

PHP & MySQL is how I would do it, yes.

You'll need a local testing server -- Wamp, Xampp, or Mamp

Depends on how many employees there are and how many departments and if you are providing access to the human resources department so they can update the information when an employees details change or they arrive or go.

Deploying a database may be a bit overkill if there is minimal departments involved and fewer than say 100 employees and your company intends to get you to update the information.

    You don't have to have a database depending on how many employees and departments there are. You could simply add a page for each department and then use a static drop down to link to the pages.

    If you do want a database you will need some sort of server such as PHP and MySQL. Unfortunately Dreamweaver doesn't supply you with the proper tools to do that with out coding it.

    There are third party extensions for Dreamweaver that make this very easy but they can be pricey depending on your needs. Take a look at DMXZone's Data Connect and App Connect. They are free and should give you the basic ability to display data from a database.

    Yes, that would be the way to do it. Since you do not feel your coding abilities are at a level to do it yourself, you will have to get your company to approve some outsourcing solution, either hiring a developer to build the directory for the company or perhaps buying into a canned software solution that you can incorporate and administrate yourself. If you think you could be up to the challenge--without jeopardizing your standing with the company--maybe you have a friend who can mentor you through the not uncomplicated process.
