Four Basic Functionality Questions with CC 17

1.  Last month, I asked a question that hasn't yet been answered; I ask again.

In code view, when I attempt to change a double-quotation mark with a single-quotation mark by selecting the double and typing a single to replace it, instead of replacing the double with a single, a get a group of marks: single/double/single, such as '"' . Can this cumbersome procedure be prevented by me or corrected by developers?

2.  Previously, I entered a non-breaking space quickly by typing "shift/command/space." Now in CC 17 (on a Mac using OS Sierra), I must type

"shift / ampersand-7 / n / b ". Is there a way to get the easy-to-use "shift/command/space" keyboard shortcut to work? Is there a menu option that makes this task easy to perform?

3.  The Spell Check feature is dysfunctional when it comes to contractions. It flags the following contractions, which are spelled correctly: aren't, doesn't, I've, they've, isn't, can't, and so on. Is there a preference setting that I need to reset so that Spell Check accepts contractions?

4.  When I activate Spell Check, its window appears directly over the text needing to be checked!!! I must drag the window to the right, off the text field, so I can see the misspellings it flags. Can't developers allow us to set where we want that window to appear in our subsequent Spell Check efforts? The relocated placement I give it lasts only until I check the next page; at that time, the darn window opens directly on the text field, blocking it from view!!!

I'm eager to learn all four answers. Hopefully, they'll make my/our use of DW CC 17 more functional and less cumbersome.

Thank you.

I don't see the relevance of that thread

Dreamweaver is giving you an extra single or double quote, right? That's the relevance of that thread.

    Jon and Nancy!

I've tested with a new "copy/paste" and, after applying the Check Spelling feature, the identical text with contractions, coming from the identical source, was now found to have been spelled correctly.

Thank you, both, for your insight on this functionality concern. I'll use the "Paste Special" process going forward.

    Hello, Rob:

I had the time to read carefully the forum page you referred me to regarding my question about auto-closing quotation marks. I found the Mac-oriented pathway to that .json file, made the addition to it,saved it. and, vuolá, it works. Thanks, Rob.

I marked your reply as "Helpful."

Glad that helped. That issue had driven me kind of nuts when I first tried DW 2017.

#4 Spell check window defaults to the left side.  My custom Workspace is set up with code on the left and design on the right.  So it's no hardship for me.

I know of no way to change the default.  Feel free to submit a feature request.

#3 I can't reproduce this.  Spell check with contractions works fine for me in CC 2017.1 on Win10.

    Nancy, hello, again:

Since you responded to my concern regarding DW CC's inability to accept contractions when I check spelling, by telling me that you haven't experienced such situations with Windows-platform machinery, I've since created a new page on a different site and the spell-check feature again flags standard contractions on my MacBook Pro.

Might this be a platform-specific issue?

Here are two screen shots of the problems flagged from the same paragraph on the same page. I copied/pasted the text from an third-party website. Might that be the problem?

The spell checker is having problems with your use of curly quotes in the text block.

When pasting text from another program, make sure to use the Paste Special option (Ctrl + Shift + V) and check the box for "Convert smart quotes to straight quotes".

Once the curly quotes are changed to straight, the spell checker will see contractions correctly.

#2 Type &n and code hints window should pop-up.

Alternatively, you could create a code Snippet and target key.

Thereafter, type your target key followed by TAB.

    Hello, Rob:

I reviewed the linked thread. I'm afraid that I don't see the relevance of that thread. Further, I'm a Mac user and cannot follow the directions given in those posts.

If it helps, I'll attach a screen shot of my Code Hints preferences window. In it you'll see that I've only made one selection.

Might you have a follow-up suggestion to make? Thanks, Rob.
