Question

FTP not working I all networks

Hi Support!

I have encountered a strange FTP-problem.

For many years I have been working on an iMac with Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 as a combined editing tool and FTP client. The Mac is connected via a home network. It has always worked fine without any problems.

Then I realized that I sometimes need to work with my websites from other locations, and therefore bought a portable MacBook Pro and installed Dreamweaver CS6. The site settings were imported directly from Dreamweaver on my iMac and everything works great when I use it on my home network. It works even if the iMac is turned off, so the laptop cannot be connected through it.

But as soon as I connect the laptop to another network or to 4G via my iPhone, the FTP connection does not work. Very strange because the settings are exactly the same.

Can you figure out what's wrong or how to troubleshoot?

  • What if any error messages are you receiving?
  • Which OS are you using?
  • Is your 2nd ISP or firewall blocking FTP access?
  • What trouble shooting steps have you tried?

Hi Nancy,

The error message says: Toggling the "Use passive FTP" checkbox may help you establish a connection...and so on.

The FTP settings for my ISP should be set to "active" which works fine in my home network. If I check "Passive FTP" checkbox Dreamweaver gets stuck in an eternal wait for reply from the server.

The OS is Mac OS Hight Sierra 10.13.4.

The firewall in the laptop is turned off and is supposed to allow all incoming FTP.

I have double-checked the FTP settings with the ISP-provider (the danish company Surftown.com) and they are correct. They are identical to the ones that work smoothly in my home network. I have also tried other options like IPv6 transfer mode and the different FTP options in the settings. But nothing works.

Can you connect to server with Filezilla FTP client?

If no, then the problem is outside DW.

If yes, you have an alternate way to FTP files from your laptop while you trouble shoot DW.
