FTP vs SFTP?

I am teaching a course in Dreamweaver. The school I teach I at will set up Shell accounts for students to host their sites as they learn, however recently we have been unable to upload our sites to the school's server. The techs on campus say it is an FTP protocol issue, that the cloud blocks all FTP protocol and only uses an SFTP protocol. Is this true and is there a way around this. When I look in my "Site" preferences I only see FTP and not SFTP. If someone could shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated.

The Cloud, as in Creative Cloud, is only relevant to Dreamweaver when installing the product and when retrieving assets produced by the likes of Photoshop.

In other words, Cloud is not involved in normal Dreamweaver operations such as FTP.

Take a look at Nancy's screenshot.

In every version of DW I've ever seen, the field for "Connect Using" will be a dropdown menu.

Within that dropdown menu will be the option for SFTP. In the latest version, it's the second option in the list.

Don't need the SFTP, my school only handles FTP and my I.T. guy had claimed it was a 'cloud' issue. Just needed some feedback on possible alternative answers to the problem. Thanks

that sounds more like something a Proxy server would be doing

You might also want to check the More Options in your Site Definitions.  See screenshot.

I am merely repeating what the tech has relayed to me. Just that the 'cloud' because is subscription based does not support FTP and only SFTP. But yes I do see the FTP over SSL, and SFTP. He says that the schools server only uses FTP and that cloud basically has stopped using it. I am just checking to see if there is something wrong I am doing. I appreciate the response.

The dreamweaver site prefereances offer FTP, SFTP, FTP over SSL. . . .Don't know why you are not seeing these options.

When you say "that the cloud blocks all FTP protocol," which cloud do you mean?
