Question

how do I get dreamweaver v18 to NOT use a temp file and test right to the website

When in v18 even with the box unchecked to view as temp file, dreamweaver still shows as temp file. I deleted the winfilecache file to no avail. When I click the browser button I want dreamweaver to open the file ON the website.

On the website???  Dreamweaver has NEVER previewed the remote server site. Not ever.

Preview is for checking the site locally before you upload files to your server.

For best results in ver 2018, right-click on the open tab and select > Open in browser.  Do not use F12.

From the latest version of DW 2021, you can disable Real-Time Preview from your Preferences.  See screenshot.

You may want to hold onto CS6.

It can be a fairly bumpy ride skipping that many versions and might be nice to have that to fall back on while you familiarize yourself with the latest.

I have the sneaking suspicion that you are seeing Adobe's server address while using Real Time Preview and not any kind of temp file. Turning off the use tamp files has always turned them off for me.

Are you talking about how the address in your browser window starts with an unrecognized IP address, instead of showing you your localhost or local file path?

If so, that would be DW's Real time Preview function. It took over for the older Preview in Browser and was generally a pain in the backside for several versions until they gave us a toggle to use Open in Browser instead.

To use Open in Browser (the old Preview in Browser) in those inbetween versions, you need to either right click on the named tab of the document you are working on, or the name of the file in the Files window, and choose Open in Browser. That will preview the page on your local machine rather than routing through Adobe's servers for the Real Time Preview.

thank you very much!! That did the trick. I'm using CS6 and am migrating all new sites to CC.

    Thanks again
