Question

I have an FTP connection problem in Dreamweaver

I have a problem connecting via FTP in Dreamweaver MX… I am not sure, maybe with my Site Management settings.

My website is defined in Dreamweaver and I am testing files successfully in three different browsers.  Since I can’t upload web files in Dreamweaver right now, I have just been using Godaddy’s file upload page for my account there to test my website online.

I have the Local Root and Default Images settings both set to the correct folder that contains my website.  I also have the Site Map Layout Homepage set to the same folder containing my website.

When I click “TEST” in the FTP settings panel, it just gives me the FTP error message… and the same thing when I click the little button in the Files panel that lights up when it is connected to FTP.

Years ago when I used Dreamweaver I never had a problem with connecting to Godaddy.com to upload my website HTML files and support images.  Yesterday, when troubleshooting with a Godaddy tech support person about this, they told me the correct Host Directory to enter, which I had already found on the Godaddywebite an entered in my Dreamweaver Site Management, FTP settings.  And, of course the simple FTP address, Username and Password…

Like this:

FTP host:   ftp.mywebsite.com

Host directory:   /home/z3ggmggw3uym/public_html/

Login:   myloginname

Password:   Passwordformyftp

I want to use Dreamweaver to upload my webpage HTML files and their support files because Dreamweaver can gather all the images for the page I’m uploading, so it is a lot faster than drag and drop.  I found other good software that will do gathering, but it is over a hundred dollars.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Tracy

That host directory really doesn’t look right for GoDaddy hosting.

I’ve used them off and on over the years, across a number of websites and various hosting packages, and have only ever seen the “public_html” part used for the hosting directory

I think the rest of that path is likely unnecessary.

It would be something to test anyway.

This isn’t surprising given MX’s advanced age and obsolescence.  You’re trying to force a round peg into a hexagonal hole. It won’t work.

MX can’t communicate with modern web servers, it’s simply too old & irrelevant.

If you need to upload content to your server, use a dedicated S/FTP client like free FileZilla.

FileZilla is updated regularly with modern security protocols to help keep you & your data safe.

Please ditch Dreamweaver MX. The software isn’t worth the cardboard box it came in. It’s unfit for modern use.

Hi Nancy.  Your answers are infinitely helpful.  I connected to GoDaddy.com about a year ago with this Dreamweaver MX via FTP for another website I was working on and there was no problem, which defies your last answer.

I am not about ditch Dreamweaver MX, that coming from something more than an unskilled amateur.

Most modern servers no longer accept unencrypted File Transfer Protocol (FTP) because it sends passwords, commands, and data in clear text which hackers can easily access.  SFTP, FTPS or HTTPS are safer alternatives. FileZilla can safely communicate with GoDaddy.  MX can’t.
