Question

Is Dreamweaver slowly going the way Muse went? What is happening?

It appears that great many features are being stripped down from Dreamweaver.  You no longer can create Templates, Library items, use web fonts, extract CSS… . What is going on?  Is this app going the way of Muse and many others? Why is Adobe so tight mouth about what is going on with their flagship web dev app?!

Does any one know what is going on?!

To create a Template from your current document, switch to DESIGN view.

    1. Go to File > SaveAs Template.
    2. When prompted, insert Editable Regions for content that will change from page-to-page.
    3. When you're done, Save Template as a .dwt file to your local site folder.
    4. Close Template.

    Create Child Pages from Template:

    1. Go go to File > New > Site Templates.
    2. Select a site Template from the 3rd panel and hit CREATE button.
    3. Save your newly created child page as index.html
    4. Repeat for other site pages.

    To Edit Template:

    1. Open template.dwt from your site's TEMPLATES folder.
    2. Make whatever changes are needed.
    3. Save and populate changes to child pages.
    4. Upload all child pages to your remote server.

    Using Dreamweaver Library Items:

    Hope that helps.

    I think you're misinformed.

    1. Templates and Library Items have NOT been removed.  They still work the same as they always have from Design View.

    2. Web Fonts from Adobe Fonts and Google Web Fonts work just fine, assuming  your documents contain the proper code (scripts).  Typekit and Edge Font services were discontinued but that's a separate issue that has nothing to do with Dreamweaver.

    3. CSS Extract Panel was nothing special. You can still export CSS from Photoshop Layers manually and paste it into DW.  You don't need a service for that.

    4. DW still works and is being maintained with security updates.  It's just not receiving any NEW features.

I'm not sure where you're getting your info from, but Templates, Library Items, and web fonts are all still available/usable in the latest version of DW.

Extract is gone, but you can still pull CSS out of your Photoshop files for use in a .css file in DW.

The program is basically on life support. No new development is planned by Adobe, beyond OS compatibility, security, and third party bolt-on updates to keep current customers from jumping ship. They announced it in one of their past community roundtable discussions.

The fact remains Dreamweaver is become absolete aplication. It is inpractical for any devaloper to use it or spend time learning the compex interface since its futire is uncertain. It has not been updated in years and it has not even been in the list of applications presented in the last Max conference, at all. Thanks for those replies.

That's not true.  If you can work with code, DW is not hard to learn or difficult to use. It's merely a glorified code editor.

I use DW regularly. It produces valid, standards-based code that performs well in all browsers.  So by definition, DW is not obsolete.

Unlike Muse which is obsolete & unfit for use, DW is being minimally maintained with important updates which means it still can be used without fear of site failure. Not so for Muse.

With respect to so-called "new features,"  I can honestly say I've not been impressed with any "new features" in many years -- the majority of which are now abandoned.  Gizmos like Spry, Browser Lab, Fluid Grids, Extract Panel and Device Preview, were just marketing hype intended to attract non-coders to use a coding tool.   I say good riddance to all the marketing hype.  Hype doesn't make great websites, good coders do.

DW produces good code and manages files in ways that other code editors can't.  But that said, DW is not the only tool I use.  I have a box of web  tools for different tasks.

When you examine other web authoring tools, you'll quickly learn that no  tool can do everything perfectly.   When you reach that light-bulb moment, you'll probably wish you still had DW.

Whatever you decide to use,  best of luck.
