Macromedia DW 8 on Win 10 [CS2 is dead]

Any recommendations for the repair or replacement of Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 on a Windows 10 OS?  The program opens, but it immediately shuts down when trying to open a page not available on the DW opening page, calling a file, try linking to a file, etc.

Did you do a clean re-install of DW8 after installing Win10?

This is almost always required to handshake software with new registry and other writable system files.

Did you also remember to install the DW 8.0.2 update?  That update -- released in 2006 -- was necessary for fixing several DW8 bugs.

Good luck!

new hire or a competitor):

Thank you for your help. I decided to take the easy way out by buying a

friend's laptop with Windows 7. I've loaded that with DW8 and will use

that till I transfer my websites.

Thanks!

Following an in-place upgrade of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit to Windows 10 I found that Dreamweaver 8 stalled and then quit when initialising.  After trying various things suggested on different forums I finally was at the point of giving up when I decided to try deleting the Site Cache files, as I had read that that could cause problems with other newer versions of Dreamweaver.  This was the answer.  Dreamweaver attempted to rebuild the cache but I stopped it as it was taking too long - one of the site files was probably corrupted.  After a re-boot everything loaded normally. 🙂  I had previously reinstalled it to its own folder in the root directory of my C drive, together with the 8.0.2 patch, but this didn't make any difference, so that probably isn't necessary.

It's 2020 now, not 2015.  The aging Creative Suite 1, 2 and 3 activation servers were decommissioned years ago!  It's impossible to activate the products beyond their trial period.

And let's not forget that DW8 is a relic.  The software is so outdated it doesn't understand much less write modern, web-compliant code.  I can't think of a single reason to be interested in it except perhaps as an historical curiosity.   It has no place in modern / responsive web developerment.

Beware of fake Adobe reps offering to sell you software or take control of your computer.  It's a scam!  Run away!

As I said, I did an in-place upgradeto Windows 10 so I didn't need to re-activate DW8.

Yes it is long in the tooth now, and I don't use it for writing new code, but it is useful for maintaining old sites.

I had every issue in this thread and then solved.

Rather than open dreamweaver and then open the file, I navigated to the file, right clicked and selected "open with" dreamweaver.

I now have no problems.

This crap is a HUGE time waster for us regular people just trying to get some work done.

It's your choice. I have no problems using the latest version of Dreamweaver that has been designed to work on the latest version of the Windows OS.

Wappler is the DMXzone-made Dreamweaver replacement and includes the best of their powerful extensions, as well as much more!

Have you considered configuring your machine for dual operating systems?

You could then boot your machine into either Windows 8.1 or 10, depending on whether or not you needed to use your DW8 (or any other legacy software that won't run on Win10).

Hope that helps.

I'd try this, seems to work for others getting the program (DW in general, not necessarily DW8) to run under W10...

Do a search for CMD

Right click the Command Prompt icon and choose Run As Administrator

In the prompt, type (make sure the space is there between sfc and /)

     sfc /scannow

Hit Enter

When it's done, restart the computer and try DW again.

Thanks for your input,  I did what you recommended, but it didn't work.  There was no difference.  The DW8 software worked in Windows 8.1, but something was different with Windows 10.

DW8 was never intended to run on OSs beyond XP or Vista.  I think you may be pushing your luck with Win10.   If Compatibility mode doesn't work, you can download a 30-day trial of CC 2015 to see how you like it.  I won't sugar coat it, a lot has changed in DW so be prepared for a learning curve.

Well, you're probably correct about pushing my luck with having DW8 compatibility with Windows 10.  It did work with Windows 8.1.  I appreciate your recommendation for the upgrade, but I'd rather buy software than a service.

Well here's your present situation:

There is no upgrade option for DW8 users - it's too old to qualify.

CS6 is the last version Adobe made available for outright purchase.  And it is Legacy software now.  It's not receiving any further updates and it lacks the modern bells & whistles that are in Creative Cloud products. It's also very expensive US $400.

IMO, you would be paying a lot of cash for something that is already yesterday's news.  And there is no telling how much longer CS6 will be able to run on modern operating systems (back to your original problem).

In contrast, Creative Cloud software is subscription only, but it receives regular updates & upgrades.  You install the software on your hard drive exactly the same as before. You can run CC software on Win / Mac or both.  It's not platform specific.

You can try running DW in compatibility mode within Windows 10.  Otherwise it might be time to upgrade.

Thanks for the input.  If I were to upgrade, what would you recommend and would I be able to use and manipulate my current website files "seemlessly"?
