Online site looks different than Dreamweaver live view; after opening site and getting the following pop up:  Started: 1/10/2018 6:14 AM

  1. WeeklyWinners.asp - error occurred - An error occurred - cannot put WeeklyWinners.asp.  Access is denied.

File activity incomplete. 1 file(s) or folder(s) were not completed.

Files with errors: 1

  1. WeeklyWinners.asp

Finished: 1/10/2018 6:14 AM

These pop ups are common. Is this because Dreamweaver does not support .asp (using iis as testing server)  thanks for your input

That's usually not caused by DW itself.

Sometimes an incorrect site definition will cause DW to attempt to upload a page to the wrong location on the server. You can see that error if you try to upload to directories above the remote root folder, for example.

If you are 100% sure you're uploading to the right directory, it could be a simple server configuration issue. Check with your hosting company to verify you have full permissions. Sometimes a server update will cause problems with user permissions.

Thanks for your very educational feedback from both of you.  John on the server settings and Nancy on the directory structure.

John, the annoying pop-ups decreased by turning off automatic up-date to iis test server in DW as you suggested.  I’m just getting one pop up (below) every time I “open” an asp file from this site; even when starting DW after it was shut down.

Every I time I make a change to a file that has links to other pages.  I must open all the pages in DW and "save as", overwriting, the file in the local folder.  This is most evident when editing a dwt template file that I’m using on every page.  Every change to template requires opening every page and doing a "save as" back to local folder or the changes do not show when the pages are opened even after saving the template file.  And, by the way; the template file runs the update process without errors every time.

Nancy, your feedback on the directory structure makes a lot of sense.  I'm referencing it as I study the IIS setup to figure out what is wrong.

What does it mean when DW says that it does not support asp files anymore.

Please send any final thoughts about the IIS test server in DW.......thanks for all your help.

When you say "looks different," we don't know what that means.  Maybe a few screenshots would help us better understand the problem.   Based on what little info you've provided, I'd say your testing server is not defined correctly.

I keep my local site folder in my testing server's default web directory.  Keep in mind that I use Linux/Apache servers, not Win IIs so my screenshots are different from yours.  But the idea is still the same.   When I save any local file it's automatically saved on the local testing server because that's where it permanently resides.

    Servers > Basic Tab

    Servers > Advanced tab

Your server model will likely be one of the ASP options.

Finally, the folder/file structure on your local side should be nearly identical to your remote server.

Post back if you have questions.

Thanks for your input; which is what I think, a breakdown in the file link to the server.  However, I'm manually uploading these files to the server from the local site folder after saving in Dreamweaver.

This problem began after setting up IIS as a testing server while keeping my internet host as the remote server.  The benefit of a testing server (IIS} seemed to be an instant; as the DW live view became much more responsive when using all the site asp files.  Prior to IIS I did not have a problem working with code and saving to the local site folder and uploading to my host server.  I just a problem with DW live view.

The IIS setup required choosing a C:inetpub/wwwroot/mysite folder on my PC.  Which is what I used for a DW testing server with Local/Network as connection option not FTP which is what the remote server is.  IIS asks for the host server information under "Bindings" and the site internet address which I have double checked (host, ip..ect) to be correct.

I cannot find any place on IIS that asks for the local folder that DW uses, where all my site files are to begin with.  Does using a IIS testing server require that I manually update files in the local site folder and host server with the files in IIS.....wwwrooot...directory?

I'm getting the same pop up every time I save in Dreamweaver, however all of the changes are current in Live View and not reflected online.

I know this is must be something simple....thanks for patience and any suggestions.

Full disclosure, I've never in 20 years used an IIS server.

Getting that error every time you save a document? That's new, and fairly important info. That would mean you have something set up to upload on Save (generally a bad idea). If your remote server uploading is working fine when you do it manually, and this only started after setting up a testing server I would check the following...

Go to Site > Manage Sites
Click your site and hit the Edit button
    Go to Servers
Click the Testing Server and click Edit
Go to the Advanced tab and make sure "Automatically upload to server on save" is unchecked
For Testing Server, make sure you have the right type selected from the dropdown
Turn off "Automatically push files to testing server" (they're already being saved to it)
Click Save (twice in the two different dialogue windows)

    Click Done
