Question

SE Indexing

Hi all - a wealth of information in here!

I've read some good topics on SEO and indexing web sites. But the one thing I'm looking for and haven't found, yet, is how will a sites ranking be maintained or lost if the directory structure is changed? I'm looking to trade extensioned URLs for directories for a cleaner look? For example mysite.com/about.htm goes to mysite.com/about/. In this instance only one page in the site is actually changing it's name completely. And a few extra pages/content are going to be added.

The site has a few decent inbound links, but nothing to generate a lot of real high volume traffic. And I want to keep it at least where it currently ranks at bare minimum. Suggestions, or am I just going to have to wait to be recrawled by the engines?

Thanks in advance!

Murray,

That was pretty darned quick, was just going to reply that I accidentally posted in the wrong board and was going to move it to 'General'. In any event thanks for the reply, I'll certainly look that up and thanks for the warnings!

Changing a site like that will trash your rankings, and everyone's
bookmarks. The only way to do it would be to also add a server redirection
with a 301 header (permanently relocated) which will provide a seamless
redirection AND will notify the SE to adjust their indexing. On *nix this
is easy with .htaccess - on Windows it's a bit more difficult, but I have
done it with ISAPIReWrite (Google it).
