SFTP connection fails that used to work: "login or password is incorrect"

My version of Dreamweaver CC (version 17.5?) running on a macbook (OSX 10.13) suddenly became unable to connect using SFTP to my standard server.  The error message is:

An FTP error occurred -- cannot make connection to host.  Your login or password is incorrect.  Please check your connection information.

It worked on Friday and stopped working on Saturday. Searching for help on the web and Dreamweaver community support site, it seems like many have had this problem over the past few years.

I've confirmed/tested/tried many things:

  • I reviewed suggestions of the Dreamweaver community support site
  • I confirmed that my username and password are correct
  • I am able to sftp to the server via the command line and via filezilla
  • I am able to use SFTP in Dreamweaver to another server
  • I updated Dreamweaver to version 18.0
  • I tried temporarily removing ~/.ssh
  • I tried removing my Dreamweaver cache file
  • I tried server config using both username+password and private key file

I will ask our sysadmins if there were any changes on our servers on Friday or Saturday that might be related, but suspect there were none and won't know until tomorrow.

Any suggestions?

Hi finin,

Can you tell us the hosting server provider that you are trying to connect to?

Also, if you could mention the list of ciphers, MACs and KexAlgorithms that the server supports- this will help us in debug the issue better?

It turns out that our site recently removed insecure algorithms from the sshd config.  I have a list of the supported Ciphers, Kex Algorithms and MACs -- is there some way (e.g., a config file) I can update Dreamweaver to ensure it uses one of our supported crypto standards?

Did you change the port?

SFTP uses port 22

FTP use port 21

At least you can still connect with Filezilla.

I'm guessing something changed on your server and DW can't keep up with it yet.
