Unable to see anything in view mode

Using Dreamweaver 20.2 build 15263.

With some html files that my web designer is making in her Dreamweaver, I can only view in live mode. I can only see the footer. Thus, I cannot edit them properly. Any ideas? This issue only happens with SOME files, not others. Most files, I can view and edit in view mode. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If server-side includes aren't the issue, verify you are working with valid, error free code, especially in those pages that don't show correctly. Something as simple as a missing </title> tag can ruin your day when it comes to working with DW.

Over the years, DW has become more dependent on clean and valid code in order for its features to function correctly.

Run the validator at http://validator.w3.org/nu and clean out any errors found, it could bring back the display so you can edit again.

Hello, thank you guys for commenting so far. I am the web developer in question here.

This is not a web page. It's an HTML email. They are coded differently using, basically, XHTML 1.0 transitional but I use the HTML5 doc type these days.

Anyway, this client has been editing these HTML emails in DW for years. I have no idea how he ended up using it as a WYSIWYG editor, but that is what he is comfortable with.

This particular email is coded the same way I have been coding them for years, based on a Litmus template. It mails fine, displays properly in all the browsers, and up until a couple of days ago, he could edit it in the Design View panel and has done so almost every single day.

I could not see what he saw until I upgraded my DW to the latest version today. And he is right, only one small portion at the bottom is showing in the Design View.

So I spent hours, and I mean ALL DAY today, going through this code looking for errors, trying to optimize the code, trying to pull out sections one-by-one to see if any of them was causing this issue. I have poured through EVERY line of code, tried various doc types, and basically re-coded the entire thing. Nothing is making this show up in the design panel again like it was just the other day. I even tried reverting to an earlier version of DW and no luck there either. I actually cleaned it up so much that it wasn't XHTML anymore and did not display properly in any of the email clients anymore. So I am at a loss.

Now I have been doing this for 20 years and would consider myself an expert in this field. So, I need to know what other options besides a coding issue could be causing this. It's just not the code. I"m a hand-coder. I don't even use DW unless it's to check issues like this for this specific client. And there have been many over the past couple of years. So does anyone know what could cause this? Any ideas how to fix it? I am out of ideas and am about to start investigating WYSIWYG editors to recommend to replace DW for him. It's about the only thing left I can do if we can't figure out what is going on with this software. And he is not going to like it. He loves DW so I'd really like to make it editable again for him in this software.

The OP said it only happens in Design view, not Live view. What's precluding him from using Live View to edit e-mail text? The OP also said it only occurs with some files, not all files. So what's different about the non-working files?

I have tested this e-mail in multiple devices and it works fine for me in DW 20.1 -- Live as well as Design view, albeit with many warnings. Can you see this one in your version of DW?

There's nothing wrong with using Live View. Design view is not accurate. At best, it's an approximation of what your site would look like in older browsers. Live View is more like real browsers.

I'm surprised your developer didn't provide you with a content management system to use. Allowing clients to edit core site files is usually a recipe for disaster.

This is likely happening because your site is dynamic and requires a server to process the information. In this case you would need to setup and configure a testing server so you can preview the site in Live View. Not having much information about your site, I would contact your web designer to understand what type of site they developed for you so that you can configure the proper local testing server so you can update your site in live view if you wish to do this.
