Upgrading to CS3 from MX2004 Problems

After a laborious process of elimination I identified the lines that were causing the problem – removed some white space (tabs & spaces – see below) and now it works??

As to why I choose to centre the page using an absolute value, it’s as I said at the very beginning; this is the first web site I’ve done and I picked up bits and pieces from books, web sites and good people like yourself …… if it worked it was in. I’m reminded of the story of the old guy that when asked for directions to another town said “well if I was going there, I wouldn’t start from here”, it’s a bit like that - I know where I want to go but I’m not always too sure about how to get there and sometimes you have to go off the beaten track just to keep moving … you live and learn and that’s what I’m doing.

Your CSS usages are a bit strange. For example, you have -

body {
font-family: "Comic Sans MS", Arial, sans-serif;
font-size: 10pt;
border: thin none #FFFFFF;
background-color: #007eff;
margin-left: -370px;
position: absolute;
left: 50%;
margin-top: 0px;
margin-right: 0px;
background-image: none;
}

* You are specifying points for your font size - that's a poor web practice.
Use pixels, em, en, ex, percents, or size names instead.
* You are specifying a large negative margin for the body tag. That's goofy
at best. I can see that you are hoping to center your page like this, but
there are much better ways. Try placing all your content within a single
fixed-width div with margin-left/right at auto, e.g.,

#wrapper { width:740px; margin:0 auto; }

If you do this, you should also do this -

body { text-align:center; }

and then add to the #wrapper rule -

text-align:left;

This accounts for strange behavior in IE6 and earlier.

* You have ABSOLUTELY positioned the body tag - why on earth?

I believe if you bring your practices within normal scope, you will see DW
respond.

Did as you said - things are becoming more mysterious...

This page - http://grrdev.co.uk/grr4/admin/test.html - has been converted as suggested and has passed the validation (got my badges) but still doesn't look right (looks fine in Dreamweaver Design).

This one - http://grrdev.co.uk/grr4/admin/admin_login.php - has not been converted but still passes the validation and looks ok! (in Dreamweaver as well).

PS The php page that the 'test' is based on looks fine in Dreamweaver but looks like the test on the web (effectively the conversion has made no difference).

What the heck is going on?

Both of those problems are related to the difference between HTML and XHTML
tag syntax.

Open the page and do FILE | Convert > HTML 4.01 Transitional, and the errors
will be fixed.

Please upload your test template (after performing this conversion) and post
a link to it.

Hi Murray, thanks for he feedback - wow! The validator threw up 91 errors so that was a bit scary but they were predominently errors in the code Dreaweaver had produced around mouseout & mouseover functionality - they had capitals in (e.g. onMouseOut) and that is now verbotten so I understand... the other big problem was that img tags had been finished with > and not />.

I corrected a test template and it now passes the validator but the design view has not changed at all? Interestingly both the corrected test file and the original DWT file when previewed look ok??

I'm reluctant to go ahead with this as I don't want to screw up all the work I've done to date but I want to move onto CS3 (it cost me a fortune apart from anything else and I want to get some use out of it) - any ideas how I might progress?

PS. This may or may not be relevant but there are many alt tags = "" as I created the template from Fireworks HTML which was broken into 'slices' so there are a lot of 'spacers'.
