visual media queries bar

Somehow the visual media queries bar disappeared on the pages in my bootstrap site.  How do I turn this bar back on?

    There's a small "3 horizontal bar" icon, fourth from the top by default, in the Common (vertical) toolbar in CC2017, click it and the bars will turn back on.

    That is, unless a code error in your css is disabling it by confusing DW into thinking there aren't any MQs.

    This option is selected.  Please see screenshot.  The bars do not come back on once Show/Hide Visual Media Queries bar is selected.  If I create a new bootstrap site from scratch, it still happens, so I don't think it is the CSS.  Across all websites, with different CSS files, the visual media query bars are missing.

    The top of your screen shot shows a dashed line around an element, that normally only shows when you're in Design View.

    The Visual MQ Bars aren't available in Design View, you'll need to switch over to Live View.

    EDIT: Your screen shot also shows the modification dialogue window for the Common Toolbar. While the Visual MQ bar option is chosen there, that only means it will be an available option in the toolbar itself. You also need to click the button in the toolbar to activate it, once you switch to Live View.
