What would you like to see in Dreamweaver?

The 2021 MAX Conference is coming in October.

In preparation, Adobe Community Professionals are being asked to submit questions for the Dreamwever Community Roundtable Discussion BEFORE Oct. 5th.

I invite other Dreamweaver users to post your questions to the Product Developers here so we can pass them along.

Thanks.

I would like to go ahead and add my vote for the return of Server Behaviors. It was probably one of my favorite things about Dreamweaver, and I was devastated when it was removed.

In a similar vein, I would really like to see some way of Dreamweaver integrating with content management systems. Considering how popular products like WordPress and Drupal are, I think it would be useful to have some way of easily editing CMS code within Dreamweaver. There are ways to do it now, but a little more attention in this area would be beneficial. Hey, maybe Dreamweaver could even introduce its own CMS template!

The reason I think it's important to focus on the content management side of things is that I see a lot of clients who want to be able to edit their site content themselves. They're not necessarily worried about layouts and colors; they just want an easy way to add a picture or an announcement. Giving developers an easy way to include this functionality for clients would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. I have moved away from designing sites page by page and have focused on Wordpress and Drupal over the last few years. But I still love to use DW for prototyping and development of templates for Wordpress. I think greater integration of this type of workflow could be popular.

One thing that has bothered me over the last few cycles is that certain frameworks have been added but never fully realized. For example, I have used Bootstrap but find several issues with the support functionality in the program. If you set up a Bootstrap page and then use the Insert panel to create a Navbar, the various options to insert pills and buttons do not integrate with the existing navbar. In fact, if you try to insert a new pill or button, it will actually break the navbar. So, to modify the structure you have to duplicate or build new buttons by hand. What I have to do is insert a complete Navbar and then remove elements I don't need. If the items in the Insert panel don't work, they should be removed.

The nice thing about the Bootstrap framework is that it is brain dead simple to build a site in DW when setting this up otherwise would be tedious. I have built complex layouts in minutes. Try that by hand. But, once the layout is built, the help DW provides starts to diminish. Along this vein, I'd also recommend more development of templates in the various frameworks. The ones provided are very dated and not easily adaptable.

The other incredibly huge hole in the program is it's disconnect with CSS preprocessors. The CSS Designer doesn't know the CSS Preprocessors exist or are even being used. You either have to build CSS through the CSS Designer or write it manually using the CSS Preprocessor workflow. But once you've started you really can't go back. Yes, you can use CSS Designer to troubleshoot the CSS, but you can't edit the styles via the panel.

I would love to see some integration of CSS Designer with the CSS Preprocessors, so you could use the panel to create your styling and have it enable nesting and other options like mixins and variables. That alone would be huge.

I'd also like to see some improvements in the FTP functionality to allow scheduled uploads and syncs. Adding a preview option would also be very helpful so I could see what's in a file before opening it.

The things I like about DW is the fact that I can do everything I need to do inside the program. I can edit, preview and test styling and even most JS within the program and then upload and download files. I use Git in my workflow but not through DW at this time.

I used Server Behaviors a lot in previous years and had to abandon some of those sites after SBs were dropped. I loved the way DW made building dynamic sites so easy. In many ways, I hate Wordpress, but it's the main game in town today.

This depends on the user base. Is Dreamweaver aimed at Graphics Designer with no knowledge of code and no wish to learn?

  1. Low code development environment

Aimed at serious Web Developer?

  1. Server Behaviours
  2. Node development
  3. Command Line Interface

The IDE that I use, covers both of the above targets.

Wappler is the DMXzone-made Dreamweaver replacement and includes the best of their powerful extensions, as well as much more!

Thanks for your input, Ben.  As an ACP, you can post in the ACP discussion area.

Hmmmm.........I guess those Product Developers you mention are going to be rushed off their feet.

For starters, although I don't use DW any longer, I think it needs to be more 'useful'. Lets face it no-one (not many) produce static webpages any longer so get those server behaviours back, (promised ages ago but never fulfilled) that would be a starting point before anything else, instead of wasting time on a UI upgrade, which is nice of course, but if there is nothing in DW worth having then its pointless. Regardless of what happens DW is a dinosuar in terms of web editors and I feel it should be put to bed and something more appropriate built and developed. The name DW has become synonymous with broken promises, missed opportunities, bad management at the very top of Adobe and as a single stand-alone product is not competitive in terms of costs, its not recoverable in my opinion after years of 'neglect'.

Yes, the return of Server-Behaviors is on our list. 🙂

Anything else you wish to add that would make Dreamweaver more relevant to you personally/professionally?
