Why is my div tag expanding when I click on the handles?

Hi Guys,

I have not seen this problem before. I have content inside a basic div tag about 3 or 4 columns wide. When I click on either handle, it expands across the page and removes any formatting inside the tag.  What would be causing this? Using CC2017
