Assistance with the ESTK 4.0 on Mac

Hello all,

Been a very long time Adobe user, but now dabbing into script writing to create some tools within the ESTK 4.0 (screenshot below). I'm having some difficulties with the application. Most times, as I'm editing code, the tool kit will stall a bit. It can take around 5 seconds or longer. I tried thumbing through the preferences to see if there's any features I can disable to help with this. Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi @AnthonyHonciano!

Sorry about the delayed response... ExtendScript ToolKit hasn't been updated in many years, and there are many problems with it, particularly on macOS (it won't run on Catalina at all, watch out). Please see some of our notes here: https://github.com/Adobe-CEP/CEP-Resources/tree/master/ExtendScript-Toolkit

You'll also find some handy guides in this repo: https://github.com/Adobe-CEP/Getting-Started-guides

We're hoping to open source the ExtendScript VSCode Plugin in 2020, which should lead to more tools for people like yourself. Follow the Adobe Tech Blog or sign up for our developer newsletter to hear when that happens.

That's unfortunate. Why has it been abandoned, as it seems that many people develope upon it?

It was actually abandoned something like ten years ago. I've only been here for two years, but I've heard that long ago, Adobe had a really great extensibility program. Around 2010 or 2011 they stopped investing in that program to focus on other things. Then in 2017, Adobe started re-investing in extensibility again, and that's when I was hired.

ESTK predates certain types of user tracking, so one problem currently is that we're not really sure how many people actually use it. It's certainly in the thousands, but it's hard to tell!

My team is working hard to modernize extensibility in Creative Cloud products, since the ExtendScript that ESTK edits is based on an old version of JavaScript (plus, perhaps, ActionScript 3).
