Changing plugin listing price from Free to Paid

I've been wondering how it works for listing when the price is changed from Free to let's say a subscription of $5 a month. Do users that installed the plugin when it was free keep the plugin? Or do they have to make the decision to pay for the new set price? I can't find any information on this online so would really appreciate any insights in this!
