Question

I will like to back up my plug-in that was installed from the Stock & Marketplace

I bought a plug-in that is not on the Adobe Stock & Marketplace anymore, and I want to back up the plug-in so I won't lose the tool. I can see that it is installed on my Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop under Manage Plugins, but I can't find the physical plugin file anywhere on my laptop.

    Hi there!

It depends a bit on the plug-in itself, but here are the default installation folders:

    • System extension folder

      • Win(x64): C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\CEP\extensions, and C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\CEP\extensions (since CEP 6.1)
      • macOS: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEP/extensions
    • Per-user extension folder

      • Win: C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CEP/extensions
      • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEP/extensions

It could be in either one. If it's a more complicated tool with something like, say, brush sets or other components that are installed into different directories, it might be harder to back up.

The name of the plug-in directory might not quite match what it's called once installed, for example, DesignToPrint is in a directory called "com.adobe.designtoPrint." Specess appears in a folder called "Dazed.Design.Specees".

You may run into a couple of problems supporting the unavailable plug-in going forward...

You may eventually need to update the plug-in's manifest to work with newer versions of Creative Cloud apps. Perhaps the developer hasn't included a maximum version for compatible apps... so maybe the plug-in will continue to work in newer app versions until there's a change from Adobe in the host app that breaks it. (Or you can no longer find and install the last compatible version of the host app... or the older host app won't run on newer hardware like the M1 processor and Rosetta mode is no longer supported.)

Besides hardware and software compatibility, you might run into a permissions problem, or a problem with the code signature. If it was a free plug-in, it might keep working just fine. A paid plug-in with a subscription might expire...
