Can't select or deselect in Fireworks CS6 (Mac version)

Hey guys,

So for most of the day everything was working fine, then suddenly I can't select or deselect items. Well, technically I can by DRAGGING as I select (which is very inconvenient) but there's no work around for editing text (which requires a double-click on the object).

It sounds exactly the same as this bug posted for Fireworks CS5;

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/755820

Now, I have Spotify installed but I've restarted without it running and yesterday there were no problems with Fireworks at all... so I doubt it's Spotify related. Everything else sounds the same though.

I've restarted, un-installed and reinstalled the program and closed all media programs I can see. Still broken. Quite possibly something else is interfering with it but I have no idea what (since I haven't installed anything new)

This is preventing me from finishing a pretty important piece of work, so I'd REALLY appreciate a response.

Thanks guys

Just came across this bug. Can't select items in Fireworks when TIDAL (hifi music streaming service) is running.

Close TIDAL, everything is instantly fine!

I found the same issue when google play music is active as well as Google Chrome. Both  need to be closed it and seems to be working now. Good luck!

I agree - turning off Spotify worked for me.

I found a conflict with FunctionFlip was causing this issue too. Quitting Alfred seemed to help for a bit but the issue came back.

Hey guys, was reading through this because I was having the same issues with selection and not being able to edit type.

I've found that Evernote's Skitch helper/app that lives in the Mac menu bar (I'm on Yosemite 10.10.1) is also conflicting and causing similar issues. I don't have Spotify - so if anyone is having these issues without Spotify and you're using Skitch (or Evernote for that matter), try closing out of it and restarting Fireworks.

I'm pretty sure I isolated it to this, as I had restarted Fireworks several times without any success. It was the first thing I tried closing because it (Skitch, that is) behaves strangely sometimes on Mac anyway.

Hope this adds a bit to what's already been helpful.

This is all very interesting, but it is a major concern that FW will stop functioning correctly because of some Chrome extension or other, or because of a part of a newer OS.

Unless FW is updated to fix these issues, there is a fair amount of certainty FW will stop working correctly by the next OS update.

And Adobe is not going to do that - so is FW not a lost cause?

I would agree - this is a losing battle. (Ultimately FW will become inoperable and vanish).

I have compared/tested numerous other applications and none have come close to FW for the work I do and the way that I use it.

In the meantime - I shall keep a keen watch for something that matches it (Sketch is getting close) and soldier on with FW 5 - until I can't.

I don't know why, but all the ways to "fix" fireworks seems to be right. I don't use Spotify, but on Mac I use Chrome as main browser. I close it and then run FW and like magic it works fine as new. But when I open Chrome again, FW startes to work bad (Even when I didn't close it). I didn't have this issue on my PC because I use Firefox as my main navigator.

Sadly someone recently recommended some FW plugins, so I think I could use them only at home. And have to migrate my web designs to Photoshop.

After getting my head burstung for days I figured out the solution, at least for myself. Hope it works for others too.

The problem seems to be with Fireworks running in parallel to any application which polls the internet, continuously.  My culprit was Chrome browser.  On deeper investigation,  a extension installed in Chrome was causing the issue.  Disabling that solved the issue.

A piece of advice : check for Internet applications such as the browser, spotify,  any music streaming apps etc. Try disabling them.

Hope it helps.

This resolved my issue - looks like I must QUIT Chrome if I want to run Fireworks. Many thanks for tracking down a work-around - I was pulling my hair out.

EDIT to ADD: More specifically - disabling the "Google Play Music" extension in Chrome fixes the issue. With that disabled - Chrome plays nicely with Fireworks. (I'm using CS5).

Thanks for this post, this bug was driving me nuts, although I thought I did not have Spotify program on my computer, but I did have a App installed called "Radia" which streams Pandora. As soon as I closed App, Fireworks all fixed, yay!

Thanks to everyone (esp. @Jesse... & @mrswarboys ) who contributed to this. I now know it was Spotify that caused all my pain. I also now know how to find those pesky user/library files that Apple chose to hide on me.
