Export Fireworks text to Illustrator

I have a lot of diagrams made in Fireworks cs6 with text and as Fireworks is no more I am trying to use illustrator.

I export a FW to Illustrator but when I open it in Illustrator I  get message about old text, and need to upgrade. If I select update all the text disappears but you can see the anchor points and the text is still in the layers.  I cannot make it appear on the screen.

I am new to illustrator so any help would be greatly appreciated.
