Fireworks Live Filter .8bf compatible photoshop plugins?

I keep downloading .8bf plugins to find out they end up in the "Menu->Filters" rather than the Live Filters that apply non-destructively to objects.

I have a few .8bf plugins which work as Live Filters. Eyecandy 4000, Alien Skin, and Splat. They are pretty good, but I am on the hunt for a simple Pixelate plugin and all the ones I've found so far will convert the object to a bitmap before being used so they aren't much use. BTW: Fireworks is still the only vector/bitmap app which edits non-destructively with photoshop plugins.

So this leads me to a question: Is there a list of freeware .8bf plugins which work as Live Filters in Fireworks?

Q2: What makes an .8bf plugin work as a Live filter? Do Illustrator plugins work as Live Filters in Fireworks?

For reference and for anyone who stumbles on this post looking for compatible plugins,  here's a list of older photoshop plugins that work as live filters (non-destructive) in Fireworks CS6.

Alien Skin Eye Candy 5 Series: Impact - includes various effects like advanced bevels, glass, motion trails, advanced shadows and a lot more

Alien Skin Eye Candy 5 Series: Nature - imlcudes effects like fire, smoke, water drops and a lot more

Alien Skin Eye Candy Series: Textures - varioous texture effects with advanced customisation features; wood, metal,  brick, marble etc

Alien Skin Eye Cany Splat v1 -  add avanced textures, fills, patterns,  borders and edge effects .. very large range of options and very versatile, although Fireworks textures and pattern fill integration is excellent in itself.

Alien Skin Xenofex 2 - various effects and filters for creating jigsaw puzzle effects , lightening, flags, crumple and ripped paper, burnt egdes and a lot more...

Alien Skin Snap Art 1.0 - Turn images into realstic artictic pictures, includes effects like pastel, comic, water colour, pencil and a lot more with advanced features for fine tuning

Alien Skin Bokeh v1 - Bokeh effects with lots of features to adjust the Bokeh effect

Alien Skin Exposure 2 - Colour and B&W adjustments/effects for photos

Another interesting plugin is Alien Skin Image Doctor 2 it won't work as a live filter as you have to create a selection before you can apply an effect,. It does image repairs to remove scratches, smooths skin, JPEG repairs etc and one tool which is really interesting is the 'smart fill' tool which works just like the content-aware fill in Photoshop.

The Alien Skin plugins come with lots of advanced features and the ability to create and save you own presets after making your adjustments. Of course these are older versions so if you wanted them you could try aproaching Alien Skin to see if they will sell you some older versions.

These plugins also work as live filters in Adobe Fireworks CS6:

Neat Image  works as of v8.4 (you need the home version as it works better than the pro version believe it or not)

AV Bros Puzzle Pro 3.1 - jisaw puzzle effects with adbavced custmisation

AV Page Curl Pro 2.2 - Advanced page curl effects

Virtual Painter 5 - Turn photos into artistic impressions (like Alien Skin Snap Art) - Dissapeared a long time agao

The PluginSite's Plugin Galaxy - Includes a vast range of effects and filters.

The PluginSite's HyperTyle - Advanced edges, textures, surface and fill effects - extrememly versatile plugin **Note one slight glitch when launching the plugin it will launch its windows behind the Fireworks main window, a minor inconveneice for a very good little plugin.

Frischluft Flair and Lencare plugins both work as live filters

I also think most of the Redfield and Flaming Pear plugins work as live filters in Fireworks CS6

StarFilter Pro also works as a live filter but only in auto mode (the manual editing does not work)

You'll also find numerous plguins that will work but NOT as a live filters;

Lens Flares: the Old Knoll Light Factory v2 works and there was an old little lens flare plugin that dissapeared a long time ago caled Axion Lens Flare both of these could add lens flare effects to Fireworks CS6. Other older plugins that used to work (but not as live filters) were the earlier Andromeda plugins too and you'll find a lot of other older photoshop plugins will work but probably not as live filters.

New phopshop plugins tend not work well or at all in Fireworks, as Adobe has updated the plugin architecture whilst Fireworks has not been updated for some 5 or 6 years (sadly) as it was EOL'd by Adobe.

Something very useful also but not a photoshop plugin is the Linked Images Panel ..... Compatible with AI and PSD formats .... Works a lot like Smart Objects in Photoshop  insert a PSD or AI linked image with the panel ... update the linked image in PHotoshop or Illustrater, save and then it updates in Fireworks with the help of this panel. Its really useful .....

Fireworks is not the only vector/bitmap app which supports non-destructive editing with classic 8bf Photoshop plugins: PhotoLine also does this, and has way better support for live Photoshop filters compared to Fireworks.

For example, Richard Rosenman's pixelate PS plugin will work as a live filter. The trick is to convert a layer or group of layers to a "placeholder" layer (PhotoLine's equivalent of Smart Objects), and then apply the filter live.

Not all PS filter can be applied non-destructively, though. But those that work in Photoshop will work in PhotoLine as well.

PhotoLine already includes a pixelize effect, although Rosenman's effect is non-antialiased. As a matter of fact, PL feels very similar to Fireworks in that both work with bitmap and vector seamlessly in one application.

Anyway, 8bf filters and effects will work as live filters in non-Adobe applications if support for this feature is integrated in the software.

I'm assuming Photoline is still being developed whereas Adobe stopped updating/developing Fireworks back in 2013 so its understandable a lot of filters are no longing working Fireworks any more.

Yes, you are correct: PhotoLine is under active development. The developers try to support 8bf plugins where possible.

PhotoLine is the closest to Fireworks that I have found, (much) better in certain respects, missing some things here and there compared. For example, no live export preview for which Fireworks used to be famous for. Then again, the interoperability with other applications is exemplary in PhotoLine, and I use more advanced tools to optimize assets.

I no longer believe that one application should be able to do "everything".

PhotoLine is rather different, and the default GUI setup is not very well thought out, and needs tinkering. But it adapts to various workflows easily, and once it is set up according to your workflow, it works exceedingly well.

It really is a shame Fireworks wasn't developed further, although at the time the app was showing its age, and needed a rethink and core update. I think that and the competition with Photoshop caused its demise.

Hi,

Photoshop plugin architecture has advanced & unfortunately most of today's plugins won't work in Fireworks or if you are lucky, may partially work i.e. not as a live filter.

As you've already mentioned some of the older Alien Skin plugins work; EyeCandy (up to v4), Snap Art v1, Exposure v2, Xenofex 2, Bokeh v1

Also may work: AVBros plugins,  The Plugin Site Plugins and Star filter pro

This is a an extension/command for Fireworks by Matt Stow that does a pixelate effect also:

So does that mean Live Filters are unique to Fireworks and only older 8bf plugins are likely to work? And I don't mean Photoshop Live effects because those are limited to just a few options or blur, bevel, outline, gradient overlay etc.

Or are Live Filters an existing feature of other vector/bitmap editors with the newer plugin architecture still supported? I've tested various editors a while ago and found nothing comparable to Fireworks.

I think Fireworks was the first or one of the first programs to have non destructive filters, Photshop has smart filters these days which is the same sort of thing,  8bf is a photoshop filter plugin format.

Some older 8bfs may work (only way to know is to test them), some will work as live filters other may only be acessible via the filters menu from the top toolbar in Fireworks, so will not be usable as a live filter in that case
