"Active X control for Flash Player could not be registered.

I have Windows XP Pro, 32 bit and IE 8.  I had Flash Player 9 and was advised that I needed 10.1.  I have done everything in the 18 pages of the Adobe "Trouble Shoot Flash Player installation and get the message "Active X control could not be registered.    Others have the identical problem but there seems no solution.   I have run the uninstallation software, and mannually run the installation.  I have been through all the suggested permissions and nothing works.  Everything was fine until the upgrade.  There must be a solution rather than completely replacing all of my software.  All else on this computer works fine.  My experience is less than geek but pretty computer savy.  I have run a complete virus check.

Hi, First of all in order to Install Flash Player, you must be the Administrator and use that Account. Not having permission is normally the reason for that error message. Are you the Administrator and did you use that Account?

You might want to read the Troubleshooting Guide since it has a section on Permissions.

Once you confirm that you are the Administrator, then post back with which Anti-Virus program you use. I know you said you already read this, but there is a way to check to see if you have permission. Did you follow that? If so what were the results?

Sometimes an Anti-Virus will block an Install, so let me know that also.

    Thanks,

First of all, I am the administrator. I went through the verification procedure to insure that I was the administrator and I checked out. I have read the Troubleshooting guide on permissions. I am using MS Security Essentials. I have turned off the firewall and the security system in trying to make the installation. I have also tried to install the program with IE8 open and closed.

Hi thanks. MSE does not usually block Flash Player, or at least it hasn't for me or anyone that I have heard of. So that should not be a problem.

You must close all browsers when Uninstalling and Installing. Try these:

Download the Uninstaller and SAVE it to the Desktop:

    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

Download the Flash Player Installer for Internet Explorer and SAVE it to the Desktop:

      http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe

Go to Tools, Internet Options and make sure Security is set to Medium for the Internet Zone. You can do this now. Next, take a look in the system tray and know how to disable any applications that use Flash(messenger services, etc.)

Once that is done, then you will close all browsers, and only be looking at your Desktop. Run the Uninstaller and when finished, Reboot(restart) your computer. Then Reboot again, to make sure any old files are removed. Then Run the Installer and when that is finished, Reboot Once.
Go to this test site to confirm: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ You should see the animation and version of FP you just Installed.
Then Using IE, go to Tools, Manage Add ons and Toolbars & Extensions and confirm that Shockwave Flash Object is Installed and Enabled.

    Thanks,
