"Adobe Flash Player is Blocked" appears on many websites after downloading and installing Adobe Flash on Macbook Air

I have been using Adobe Flash for several years. I recently downloaded and installed Adobe Flash Player, and now, websites that apparently use Adobe Flash give me the message "Adobe Flash Player is Blocked". What can I do to clear up what appears to be an erroneous condition?
