Audio plays only through USB on 17" Macbook

I have a new intel-based 17" macbook. I can only get audio to play through my usb headset with flash. All's well with every other audio application: quicktime, dvd player, vlc, etc.

Is there any way to set flash player preferences? They don't seem to use the system setting.

The apple store recommended a format/reinstall. That's pretty harsh for what looks like a prefrences setting. Any advice?

Run garageband. That tweeks the quicktime settings for midi, or something like that. Seems like something easy for adobe to fix.
