Question

auto update - how to disable prompting?

We prefer to test and deploy new versions of Adobe Flash Player and thus prefer to not have Adobe prompt the end-user for automatic updates.  We accomplished this in the past with a setting in mms.cfg and also a registry value.  Apparently, sometime in the past year, Adobe must have changed the values that control automatic update behavior.

Does anyone know how to disable the prompting?  I need to find a solution as the prompts are driving Service Desk calls.

Hi,

Nothing has changed with the settings you refer to.  To disable Flash Player updates complete, enter the following in the mms.cfg file:

AutoUpdateDisable=1

Deploy to all of your clients at the following location:

  • 32-bit OS: C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
  • 64-bit OS: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash

If you use the Flash Player uninstaller to uninstall Flash Player before deploying the new version, then the update options are getting reset to the default (AutoUpdateDisable=0).  It's recommended to deploy the mms.cfg file disabling updates with each deployment, to ensure the correct setting exists on the system.
