Question

Can Brightcove pages work under Ubuntu version of FlashPlayer?

I know that Adobe has frozen Linux support of FlashPlayer at level 11.2.  Nevertheless that version of FlashPlayer does work quite well.   One exception, however, is pages implemented through BrightCove's Cloud Player, also known as Flash Media Server.  Both the New York Times and BBC use Brightcove to serve their video content.

I've had a conversation with Brightcove tech support, and they tell me that they don't support Linux.  Nonetheless after installing my Kubuntu 12.10 I was able for a while to access Brightcove videos.  Then something happened -- probably a side effect of an update -- and thereafter, every attempt resulted in a VM_FMS_CONNECT_FAILED error.  That same error has been reported by people on other systems, even Apple.  It's browser-independent -- I get the same result with Chromium, for example.

Does anyone here know of a workaround?  Given the lack of support from Brightcove, I doubt if there's actually a fix.

i was able to follow up with someone on the video side.  fms can restrict connections based on player version and/or platform.  they asked for a specific URL you are using from which they may be able to tell if this is the case...

Unfortunately the way the NY Times does things, the troublesome videos don't show up with a different URL than the site itself.  BBC videos also manifest a similar problem.

But one more input, which may offer a way to track this down.  I have Kubuntu 12.10 running on a virtual machine within the real Kubuntu 12.10.  At this point in the virtual machine's history both the NY Times and the  BBC videos run correctly.  I've taken a snapshot of the (virtual) machine state.  If I can figure out how to provoke the problem, then we'll have a big clue.  And with the virtual machine I can backtrack to the point before where the error manifests itself.

You've probably already tried this, but I'd start by clearing Flash Player data and settings along with audio / video license files.  I'll ask my goto linux expert if he has any other suggestions.

Where is the Flash Player data that I need to clear?  It's probably not in anything within the Firefox directories since Chromium also manifests the problem.
