Can't delete Flash9.ocx

While trying to solve some Flash/IE installation problems, I have discovered that I can't delete the following file:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9.ocx
I've tried safe mode, "move on boot", BartPE, and nothing will get rid of this file. The read only attribute is set and cannot be changed....does anybody have any ideas as to what might be causing this?
Thanks,

Rob

Thanks for providing a specific example. We'll take a look to see if we can experience the problem ourselves.

How to delete flash.ocx: Run the command prompt (cmd). Go to the directory containing the ocx file. Type
    cacls flash.ocx /R Everyone /E /C
You will now be able to delete the file.
The problem is that macromedia has sabotoged the ACL on the file (the command above will fix it). One has really got to wonder what they were thinking...

I don't blame you for feeling that way, my flash 9 player crashed again last night and I'd had it with Windows! I switched over to Firefox and it hasn't crashed again (yet).

I have the same stuff as well for the most part (Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware), my computer isn't brand, brand new either, but still it's just disgraceful that Adobe hasn't fixed this problem, so that other people don't have to go through all of this.

Well. I'm back ... and I'm posting to this thread simply to show how unbelievably long a person can suffer. I'm going to post a new thread linking to this one, but I gotta say, this kind of thing is really unforgiveable.

I had a fix that worked (posted back in 2006) and made my own website outlining that fix. I had over 2000 hits and apparently it was successful for 82% of the people who left feedback. Which is still kind of pathetic since Flash Player is virtually *pun intended* impossible to live without these days.

Now, I have a new computer. After some relative peace with Flash Player for the past year and a half, I was forced to download the latest release of Flash 9 (9.0 r115) and the H-E-double-hockey-sticks has started all over again. Adobe has very kindly (please note the heavily dripping sarcasm) removed the version 9 beta (9.0.18.16) that WORKED and I am back to randomly crashing 6 - 10 times a day on any number of websites/games that utilizes the player.

Mind you, this is a BRAND NEW COMPUTER! A fresh installation of WinXP Pro (no Vista for me until Mr. Gates irons out the multitude of incompatibility issues with that load of manure), no possibility of corrupted registry files or leftover Flash files. I basically have Ad-Aware SE, Spybot S&D, Avast!, Office 2003, WLM and NOTHING ELSE.

I try to play online games with MSN Zone and Shockwave.com and NOTHING ELSE.

Crash and burn, over and over.

    Disgraceful.

I pray to all the cyberspace gods that Paul Betlem is still employed with Adobe.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm still around.

I'm truly sorry to hear of your ongoing problem with the Flash Player, and 9.0.115 in particular. I'm sure its frustrating given that you're using a new machine. I'd be upset, too.

Its difficult to predict what's going on. If you're willing to try a few things, myself or some others on the support team can try to isolate the problem so we can fix it.

Can you get the crash to occur on a single web site with only one browser window running and only one browser tab open? Simply open your browser and go directly to the game that has crashed in the past.

If so (and you're using IE), would you be willing to try the same thing under Firefox? (You'll need to install the Flash Player plug-in for Firefox).

Let me know if you can get IE or Firefox to crash in this scenario. If so, can you provide the URL where the crash occurred?

I don't know if this is the right place for this question, but here goes...

I have PC with WIndows XP Media Center edition and just discovered in Media Center an "Online Spotlight" option which contains videos, games, etc.

Regardless of the choice I make, it says I need to update my Flash player, gives an option to download update then says it needs to be opened in browser, I choose that and it goes to Microsoft Explorer and can't find page. I use Firefox, so I copy the link, download the Adobe Flash and Shockwave programs - everything seems to be fine...

except I just ge the same message again and again...

    what's going on here?

For those running into problems on myspace.com (or other web sites), please upgrade and let me know if the problem persists. I need you to provide exact URLs for each tab you have opened when the problem occurs. (I realize its a pain to provide this information, but its the only way I can provide help.)
Also, if you're seeing a crash that occurs when leaving your browser open overnight, the problem could be poorly written Flash content. Again, I need exact URLs before I can assign an engineer to investigate. We need to see the problem ourselves to diagnose the source of the issue.

Well you folks are lucky. You just get error messages and lock ups. My machine just totally reboots when I hit sites with flash content. Sometimes it will open a page with flash content but if you try to do anything like zoom etc while there BAM reboot city!!

I was having the exact same problems mentioned in this topic. Uninstalled/installed Flash and Shockwave. Used the appropriate uninstaller, searched for rogue .dll extension files, cleaned out the C:\Windows\System32\Macromedia\Flash files, looked at the manage add-ons, posted on this forum, e-mailed Adobe, spoke with them on the phone and even uninstalled IE7 and went back to IE 6. None of that helped.

Reading through some of the responses on various posts, I found the following:

Uninstall flash with the latest Adobe stand alone uninstaller

Download Complete Standalone installer Flash Player 9 earlier version from
    http://www.softwarepatch.com/internet/flash.html

Uninstall shockwave with the latest Adobe stand alone uninstaller

Download Stand-alone installers for Shockwave Player: previous versions only
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_18629

Note: Users of Windows XP operating system must use the 8.5.1 Shockwave player or higher. For more information, please seeInstalling the Shockwave Player on Microsoft Windows XP (TechNote tn_15924).
    Windows Shockwave Player 9.0.0.434

I tried this last night - one and then the other one - and they both are running fine.

    Hope this helps someone else.

    Hi ,
I am seeing that this problem with Flash Player is indeed an epidemic. It happens on machines running WinXP,Win Vista, and any other OS aand /or browser. You would thinnk a big organisation like yours would do something tho fix the probelm. But no. As youwr own site says it seems to happen whwen the flash player is playing contents on different pages, and cannot keep track of which is which.

If you CAN'T DELETE flash9.ocx or anyother file here's what you can do to manually deleted it.
    Right Click on the file.
Click Properties > Security Tab > Advanced
Under the permissions tab will be the following entry:
Deny | Everyone | Write Attribute

Highlight this entry and click remove.
You can now delete the file.

I got sent here, as I had a problem installing 4od, as it couldn’t over right my flash player, which to be honest I’m glad it couldn’t as it would have removed my debug version of flash 9 (i’m using flex 2)
Although channel 4 seem to be blaming adobe, I’m quite happy that the file doesn’t have permissions to be simply overwritten, although everyone is slating the flash team here! I say well done!
I’m loving Flex 2! Well done! And a heads up as channel 4 may send more people here ....

    hey guys,

I have a similar problem to all of you but it is the flashutil9b.exe file that is in question. Even more troubling is that it is on a whole DIFFERENT partition to windows. With a brand new windows install. The file is located on my old windows 2003 partition and I cant delete it on my vista partition. What is going on there? I have tried the adobe remove tool but obviously that would not fix it as it is removing the flash that is in use on my vista pc. It doesn't even know about the file on the 2003 drive.

    Any ideas?

    @jp23cent:
JP, it could really be that your sound card is the problem, not your graphics card. Read my posting just above yours.
BTW: Paul has not reacted in any way to my posting or to the PM I sent him.

I ran into a similar issue on Vista and after some futzing around I discovered there appears to be a problem with the ACL (Access Control List) on the files in question.

To get round this you need to be logged in as an administrator for that machine and then to unset some of the ACL settings.
I haven't got an XP box to walk through this on at the moment, but it should be fairly similar to the Vista route.

    For Vista:
Right click on the file you wish to get rid of and choose properties.

This takes you to the "Properties" dialog

    Switch to the Security tab.
    Click the "Advanced" button.

This takes you to the "Advanced Security Settings" dialog

    Click the "Edit" button.
Click OK to the UAC dialog.
Select the entry for "Deny, everyone, Write Attributes, <not inherited>"
    Click the "Delete" button.

OK out of all the dialogs.
As an administrator you should now be able to delete this file.

    Hope this helps.
