Hy, i have the same probleem, i can´t download Adobe flash player. Everytime i try it i get that message:
Error during Flash Player installation:
'Failed to install. For Troubleshooting please see: http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_19166'
I have gone through every support step that was listed and still I can't download. Started with the install, didn't work; next came the unistall and reinstall didn't work. Internet Explorer ActiveX settings were all right but still didn´t work. Then downloaded SubInACL and the reset_minimal.zip file (Extracted the reset_minimal.cmd file to C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\. , Double-clicked reset_minimal.cmd. , opened that thing it opened a black box where these lines started running and then it was finished, then i restarted and tryed to download flash but still couldn´t). Then i tryed that :
1. Select Start > Run
2. Type in “regedit”
3. Right click on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. Select Permissions
5. Select Advanced
But there was nothing under permission entries. It doesn't look at all like the example.
I have Windows XP home edition.
Please, Please, Please HELP:(((((!

My Problem was fixed with SubInACL. I had gone through all steps and it didn´t work but i didn´t know how to handle SubInACL. This was a Windows System Registry Issue. It was fixed thanks to adobes great customer service. Special thanks to Darren J. McNally for the help :)

I cannot at all download the Adobe Flash Player. It is telling me I need permission from MS XP. Their web site informs that Adobe Flash can open the back door for an attacker on one's computer. Help!

    To whomever might help:

Seems I fall into this forum thread. This morning I got a prompt on my desktop when I opend my computer to install an Adobe Security update.

I had seen it before and in the last few days I have had Microsoft close and restart my computer for no apparently good reason - "Microsoft has encountered a problem and must close. You will lose all information in any program you have running" ...so I figured maybe this "update" would help.

Mind you Adobe Macromedia Flash Player was working fine before this and so was "shockwave" [altho slow]. Seems to me I could view everything on the Internet.

Since I downloaded the security update this morning I cannot view any Macromedia. {such as streaming photo galleries on auctions - including my own).
Also, when I opened my local newspaper I got this message (same as someone above) : "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly." Well that never popped up before!

I have Windows Millenium and use IE6

I have not touched my security settings. I went to look at them according to what I read above.
It is Custom Level and set a notch below Medium just under
    "Safe browsing and still functional"
and is at "Prompts before downloading potentially unsafe content" with the notch "approriate for most internet sites" just below where it is set.

I looked at the "Active X controls and plug-ins." It is set at "prompt"
Download unsigned Active Controls = "disable"
Run Active X controls and plug-ins = "enable"
Script Active X controls marked safe for scripting = "enable"

I am just a user - not a programmer - and I would like to get it back to working. I do not know where to start. I found this Forum is about it. I don't think I want Flash Player 9 with my older system. I think I had 6 or 7. How do I find out?

How do I UNINSTALL this "Update" that has apparently upset everything? Or...

How do I do what ever I have to do to get Macromedia and Active X working again. Where do I find them - to uninstall in the first place?
And then INSTALL one that works - like maybe 8 or 7.

I am not an administrator - I am a lone user on my computer
If I sound like an idiot, ok, but at least I think I am asking in the right place. Thanks for any help...

Last night I went looking for Macromedia Flash Player on my computer. I could not find it. I did find Adobe Reader 6.0, 2 Internet Explorers each with a different "Q" number and"Viewpoint Media Player". It was not in the control panel, the run/uninstall programs, the desktop or programs. I do have an Adobe Download Manager in Programs.

So was it wiped out by that "update"?

Since I could see U-Tube and all other moving photos that required Macromedia before yesterday, I must have had it. I tried U-tube this am and got this message: "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player."

Maybe I should just try an install? I saw one for 8 around here somewhere... Looks to me like there are alot of problems with 9 viv a vis my system as I read above.

Further looking I found, on the desktop - Flashplayer 7_WINax "Would you like to install the Flash Player 7 Active X control?
    and

"MPSetup" which when I click on it starts sending "papers" from one "folder" to another and says something about flashplayer 9. I canceled it because I don't know what it is doing.

Searched for what MPSetup is and find it is a Windows process for installing media players. It can be infected and a source of errors. One site has a free scan to determine if it is legit or a virus. Since I don't know what I am doing, how do I know I can trust the free scan site?

Is any of this relevant or need to be addressed?

    Thank you LillSD

For others experiencing issue with IE please check to be sure that the Shockwave Flash Object under Tools, Manage Add-ons is enabled.

Note: This is for IE on Windows XP and Vista.

I guess I did everything I could. I followed all of your steps. Nothing worked. I still can't install Adobe Flash Player for Internet Explorer. It seems that there is a problem with registering Flash9f.ocx

Here's my desktop's screenshot from when I try to install it using an executable installer: http://images26.fotosik.pl/233/344d74154b7b3995.png

The executable installer did not work. I tried to send myself a private message to test before I send you my name, etc. because I'm afraid I would publish my info for everyone to see. I did not receive in my email nor did it appear in this forum. I know you probably think I'm hopeless, but how does the private message work? Does it go to the person's email?

I was able to download the “reset_minimal.cmd” and the “subinacl.exe” to the desktop and ran the "reset.cmd" file. It seemed to get me further in the Flash download than anything previous. The Flash logo appeared and the green and white bar which appeared to be downloading but after 5 minutes it was still going. I have cable so I have no idea what modem I have. I could not find on http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/ where to open the case. I'm so unknowledgeable about this - please give me specific instructions on how to open a free case. Thanks so very much.

Please try to download the executable installer from here:

    http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_19166

The executable installer is about ½ way down the page:

If you get stuck, send me a private message with your full name, email and phone number and I'll help you open a case and resolve the issue.

    Hi FPnewbie

The Adobe Shockwave object that you see in Internet Explorers Add-ons is associated with Flash Player. (I realize that the terminology can be somewhat confusing/mis-leading). If you look at the Adobe Shockwave object in the Add-ons list and scroll to the right you should see a file name of ‘Flash9f.ocx’, if you have the latest version of Flash Player installed.

Are you able to view the following detection page when logged into your user account? (I did read your post and see that Flash is working as Admin).

    http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/

With the latest version installed, it would say, “You have version 9,0,124,0 installed”. If you do see this, Flash Player is working.

I noticed you have a case open with Adobe, can you respond with the case number?

Also in regards to your initial question:

“What is the difference between Flash Player and Shockwave Player?”

Flash Player and Shockwave Player are both free web players from Adobe. Each has a distinct purpose:

    • Flash Player displays content created with Adobe Flash CS3 Professional such as web application front ends, high-impact website user interfaces, interactive online advertising, and short-form to long-form animation and rich Internet applications created using Adobe Flex.

    • Shockwave Player displays content created with Macromedia Director® such as high-performance multiuser games, interactive 3D product simulations, online entertainment, and training applications. By using extensions, developers can extend the capabilities of the Shockwave Player to play back custom-built applications.

Could someone please tell me what the difference is between the Adobe Macromedia Flash Player and the Macromedia Shockwave Player?

I downloaded and installed the Flash Player, but the add-on listings show an Adobe Shockwave Object. As I previously posted, I'm having problems seeing content in a User Account. Could it be that the wrong player is installed? I've reinstalled the Flash Player many times, but I still see a Shockwave Flash Object in my IE7 add-ons.

Please help me understand this, as this is confusing.
