Can't Install Flash Player from Download manager

I have an issue that I believe revolves around Adobe Download Manager, but I am trying to load Flash Player which is why I'm in this forum.

I have ran the Adobe Flash uninstaller, removed download manager and tried to load flash again, but have been unsuccessful.

Currently, when I attempt to get the current flash player I get the prompt for Adobe Download Manager, it comes up, then begins downloading. It hits 100% and then just sits, with no progress. If I attempt to close it I get a prompt asking if I want to stop installing all applications.

I had Process Monitor watch the installer and it is pulling data down and putting it in

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NOS\Adobe_Downloads\nos_22369.txt

That file just grows continually during this process, I've let it get up to 1 GB, when I was first tracking it down, basically it just downloads at max speed from the internet connection, for me, about 400KB/s.

As soon as I cancel the download manager the Adobe Downloads folder and the file inside it disapear.

At this point I get the Website wants to install the following addon Adobe Flash Player, from the adobe flash player competetion/dlm site. If I choose install activeX control, I get the Adobe Flash player installer install prompt, choose install, then it just hangs, and doesn't do anything.

We are running Symantec Endpoint 11.04.2295, (MR4), which I have disabled for the installation, but still no sucess.

Any suggestions? I know I can get a standalone installer, but I want to be able to load updates without jumping through that hoop every time.

Thanks

Mark

I am still at the same point, I can load with the stand alone installer, but not the standard process from the website. I am using IE8, with all the current patches from Microsoft, I'm sorry to hear that you are still using IE6, and hope you plan to upgrade soon.

I have tried manually disabling all add-ons loaded into IE, and then running dlm, to the same effect.

As I said in my initial post, what I'd like to fix is DLM, and I'm only posting it in the flash discussions because that was the particular product I am attempting to load. I know everyone hates dlm, and their fix is to simply bypass it, but Adobe doesn't make that particularly easy for the non-technical user, and I don't see them moving away from it as their primary install method anytime soon.

I did also want to note that you are incorrect in saying that you have to use the uninstaller every time, as noted in the install.log as you load new versions,

which you can see for yourself when you have it loaded in your windows\system32\macromed\flash\install.log.

Now it is possible that it will not work correctly, but Adobe is certainly attempting to clean up any and all old versions of their software. Yes, I know their website says if you have issues run the uninstaller, but it would appear that a properly functioning pc would have no need of that step.

So, Any thoughts on fixing the Adobe/Akami DLM?

Hi Mark, thanks for the comments. When I said that the Adobe Uninstaller must be run before an Install that is per the Troubleshooting site. Here I don't hear from anyone, saying Hey FP installed perfectly. As you can see this forum is about users having problems installing FP and the reasons are many and various depending on the system they are using and the browser. So 100% of my help is devoted to that. Yes, if all of the "ducks" are in a row, then FP is a piece of cake. It is getting the ducks in the row that is the problems that I try to address here.

Your install log is fine and I agree with your point. I received a prompt from Adobe that the update of vs. 10.0.32.18 was available Adobe installed it by my "Yes, install now"  So I did not have to come to the Adobe site and Install that way. The DLM was not used nor was it ever installed on my system.

Now as far as the DLM is concerned, following is a link from Microsoft's MSDN site that is all about Akamai Download Manager, troubleshooting, etc. I haven't had time to read all of it by any means, but bookmarked it.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb153537.aspx

Oh, that MS site has screenshots also.

I haven't had time to read the 2 links you sited yet, but will.

The only comment from researching and reading about Adobe, FP, MS, XP, Vista , Win7, IE6, IE7 and IE8 and all of the Third Party Toolbars, programs, Java, ActiveX, Firefox, plug-ins, Registry changes, and on and on, is that Computers are becoming too complicated. And now MS is preparing to come out with IE9:-)

Hope it is helpful to you.

Hi Mark, I just read some interesting information on the DLM and thought you would be interested.

Adobe has a link that I'll include, and they list the programs that are available to be used with the DLM and Flash Player is

not listed. I am currently working with another user on this and gave her my opinion that she received the DLM on her

system, NOT by Flash Player, but by downloading Adobe Air and or Shockwave Flash Player.

Granted I don't understand this, because I had the understanding that the DLM WAS offered with FP. Now I am confused.

This link is a 12/3/09 Tech Note.  Not sure yet what it means other than what it says. It does not explain the DLM offered

    with the FP.

This is just an additional piece to the puzzle. Don't mean to add to your woes, but this was news to me.

    Thanks Mark

The PC in question is Windows XP SP3, using IE for the web browser. As far as my comment about jumping through hoops, it's that I'm not the primary user of this pc, so I'd like to be able to tell them to go to Adobe's website, and choose get flashplayer and update it, but if the Adobe DLM isn't working, then we will have to use an alternate, not well advertised link to update the software next time they have a security patch.

As far as the other people having issues with the dlm, is it similar circumstances, where the temp file that it is downloading into just grows until stopped?

Hi Mark, thanks. The DLM is supposed to download the FP and after it does that it is to disconnect from the system. That appears to be where part of the problem is, not disconnecting. Also there are reports of "hanging" and that is what it sounds like is happening with to you. From what I know about it and the reports from users, not only here but on other forums as well is that it causes different problems. That is why (my opinion only) Adobe is suggesting the stand alone

    link.

The Adobe Uninstaller link is always the same and that must be done anytime an Install of FP is to be done.

You didn't say what version of IE you are using, but IE7 and IE8 have Administrative/Permission/User account issues.

I use XP3/IE6, and do not have any of those issues and know what various obstacles can cause conflicts with an Uninstall and Install. Most users do not and I try to advise them so they avoid these and have a successful Uninstall/Install.

Many users think of FP as a program, it is not. FP works in the browser and any add on, BHO, plug-in, Helper, etc. affects the FP Uninstall/Install. Firewalls, Anti-Virus/Spyware and even a couple of the new Java entries will block an Uninstall/Install. Third party Toolbars are another obstacle.

Once these hurdles are cleared, then FP uninstalls/installs just fine.

I prepared a list of questions for information I need from a user to try to make it simple that I send by attachment here.

(see below) It is helpful and saves time.  If you just simply Uninstall/Install without taking the above mentioned issues into consideration the result will be the same.

    Hope this has been helpful.

    Thanks

Hi Mark, The DLM is known to cause problems for many users; other users have no problem with it. Now one thing I'm not sure of is your statement about updates and jumping thru that hoop. An update as far as Adobe goes is a new updated version, not an add on. The previous version of FP is not removed by trying to install the newest version. The Adobe Uninstaller must be used and followed by the Install of the newest version. The stand alone version has the advantage of not using the DLM. So the DLM for whatever reason isn't working on your system.

Here is what I would suggest. Well, wait. You didn't say what OS you are using, or what browser.

    Please advise.
