Constant Crashes

On a new ASUS laptop (bought about 2/13/16), as soon as I downloaded the latest Shockwave Flash it IMMEDIATELY began crashing whenever a video is played or an ad is displayed or I try to play a Flash-based game.  It happens both in Firefox and Edge.  It particularly happens whenever I try to play the games at pch.com.  On that site, as soon as the video ad starts, Flash crashes or as soon as I start playing a game, Flash crashes.  Most of the time the only fix is to log out of the program, log back in and then, after a game or two, it crashes again.  I've also had problems with flash scripts freezing and I've found flash to be using up to TWO GB of memory and up to SIX flash programs running at once with only a single tab opened.  Clicking End Task in Task Manager only fixes the problem temporarily.  Naturally, support at pch.com says the problem is either Flash or Firefox and they offer zero help otherwise.

Windows 10

Version 1511

Build 10586-104

Intel Core i7-6700HQ

CPU@ 2.6GHz

12 Gb RAM

64 bit operating system

Shockwave Flash

20.0.0.306

Shockwave Flash 20.0 r0

File NPSWF32_20_0_0_306.dll

Flash Protected mode unchecked

Hardware Acceleration OFF

Firefox version 44.0.2

ALL Add-ons disabled

  • total sessions 39
  • time open 6 days
  • application crashes 1
  • plugin crashes 310

User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:44.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/44.0

I can send detailed crash reports from Firefox if that would be helpful.

The crashes appear to be happening underneath us.  The firefox crash signatures all reference ss2osd.dll, which are the RealTek audio drivers.  It takes a while for drivers to fully bake on newer operating systems, and the early RealTek drivers for Win10 were a little rough.  You're not the first person with this issue.

I found similar references to this DLL on the Steam forums:

I'd start by updating your audio drivers.  Yours are old.  You can find them here:

http://www.realtek.com/Downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Also, the standard 32-bit Firefox doesn't work great on Windows 10 x64.  You're going to get a *much* better experience using the 64-bit Firefox Beta, which you can find here:

Mozilla Firefox Web Browser — Download Firefox Developer Edition or Beta & Help Determine the Next Firefox — Mozilla

If you continue to experience crashes after updating, please post a link to the new crash report.  You don't have to cut and paste the data from those.  Once you submit it from Firefox, just providing the link on the page that opens is totally adequate.

Thanks!

Is there a way I (the original poster) can upload the Firefox crash reports as a reply?

Hi,

The best thing to do is to file a bug, and include the crash report in the bug report.  The bug report will then be triaged by a member of QE and processed accordingly.

I filed the bug report a couple days ago.  Of course, that does nothing to fix the problem now.  Flash still crashes and screws everything up 15-20 times a day.

Hi,

Please file a bug at https://bugbase.adobe.com and include the Firefox crash report as well as the DxDiag report.  See https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html‌ for information on obtaining the DxDiag report.

Thank you.
