Question

Dir.Dcr Files Remain and Update Settings

Specs:

Windows 7 x64

Flash Version 27.0.0.130 on Firefox/Opera/IE

Adobe Flash Player 27 ActiveX, Adobe Flash Player 27 NPAPI, and Adobe Flash Player 27 PPAPI are installed.

I downloaded the latest Adobe Flash updates separately for all three browsers and the installation files were saved to my Windows Explorer Downloads folder.

After installation, three 'Dir.dcr, Dir (1).dcr, and Dir (2).dcr' files remained in my Downloads folder.

1. Can they be permanently deleted or should they have automatically been placed with the respective browser Flash software wherever it is automatically saved to?

2. Does selecting 'install updates automatically' in the Flash Player Settings Manager (within Control Panel and selecting Flash) check for updates automatically in all three browsers or do I have to go to the Adobe Flash Player test page using each browser and select that option?

3. Every time I go to the Adobe Flash test page, another Dir.dcr file is added to my Downloads folder so now I have 13 Dir.dcr files-What is up with that and can they all be permanently deleted?

I downloaded the latest Adobe Flash updates separately for all three browsers and the installation files were saved to my Windows Explorer Downloads folder.

Please post the names of the files you downloaded.

After installation, three 'Dir.dcr, Dir (1).dcr, and Dir (2).dcr' files remained in my Downloads folder.

.I am UTR on this. I don't recall seeing Dir.dcr left over in the Downloads folder after installing Flash Player, and double-checked it with various install vectors (online/web shim installer, standalone EXE & MSI installers - none left Dir.dcr files in the Downloads folder.

    1. Can they be permanently deleted or should they have automatically been placed with the respective browser Flash software wherever it is automatically saved to?

dcr files are not Flash Player files.  They appear to be Adobe Shockwave Player files (2 different technologies).

    2. Does selecting 'install updates automatically' in the Flash Player Settings Manager (within Control Panel and selecting Flash) check for updates automatically in all three browsers or do I have to go to the Adobe Flash Player test page using each browser and select that option?

'Install updates automatically' opts your system into Background Updates.  This method will update Flash Player in the following order (assuming the versions installed):  ActiveX, NPAPI plugin, PPAPI plugin.  Each update is performed individually and if all 3 are installed it can take up to 3 hours to update all plugins.

    3. Every time I go to the Adobe Flash test page, another Dir.dcr file is added to my Downloads folder so now I have 13 Dir.dcr files-What is up with that and can they all be permanently deleted?

I've never seen this behaviour reported with Flash Player, and .dcr files appear to be Shockwave Player. What browser are you using the results in this behaviour?

The Adobe Flash test page is one of the most visited pages and yours is the first report I've heard of this behaviour.  If you can, please post a short video showing this behaviour.

    M_Vargas:

Here is the update: -I can confirm that Flash version 27.0.0.130 is installed on Firefox, Opera, and IE

-I can confirm that Adobe Flash Player 27 ActiveX, Adobe Flash Player 27 NPAPI, and Adobe Flash Player 27 PPAPI are installed in Add/Remove                                Programs

-I can confirm that 'Check Updates automatically' is set in Flash Player Settings Manager and I am aware that ActiveX, NPAPI plugin, PPAPI plugins                                will be installed in that order.

When I go to the Adobe test page (www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome) using Firefox, I click on Flash Player and it confirms that the latest version is installed so there is no issue with Firefox. *Shockwave Player is not even available to be tested using this browser so nothing is available to be downloaded.

*When I go to the Adobe test page (www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome) using Opera, it 'automatically' downloads dir.dcr and places it in my Downloads folder before I even click on Flash Player. I click Flash Player and it confirms that the latest version is installed. *I am now aware that dir.dcr is Shockwave and I checked Add/Remove Programs but Shockwave is not installed so why is Shockwave 12.2 automatically being downloaded since I thought it was being phased out?

*When I go to the Adobe test page (www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome) using IE 11, it does not automatically download dir.dcr 'but' it asks me if I want to install Shockwave Player 12.2 (it does not automatically install it) so I 'X' out of it and click Test Flash Player and it confirms that the latest version is installed. *Why is Shockwave 12.2 being offered foe download since I thought it was being phased out?

The multiple dir.dcr files that are being downloaded and put in Downloads only occurs when testing Adobe through the Opera browser so I wanted to know if they need to be placed somewhere or if they can be deleted.

    Hi,

Thank you for the additional information.

You're confusing 2 different products.  The www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome page is for Adobe Schockwave Player (only) not Adobe Flash Player, which you are installing (version 27.0.0.130 is Flash Player version, not Shockwave version).  I don't have Shockwave Player installed and experienced the same behaviour as you when visiting the www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome page, using Chrome, which doesn't support Shockwave Player.

To test Flash Player, go to https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html

I'm quite certain you can delete the dir.dcr files that have been downloaded.  I don't work on Shockwave Player and can't tell you why the dir.dcr file is downloading instead of prompting you to install Shockwave Player, or display a message stating your brwoser doesn't support Shockwave Player (which is most likely the case).

According to https://helpx.adobe.com/shockwave/kb/shockwave-player-64-bit-windows.html, Shockwave Player has very limited support on 64-bit operating system.  Shockwave Player plays Adobe Director content, which is mainly elearning content and some games.  The vast majority of folks don't need Schockwave Player. If you do require Shockwave Player, please post to the Adobe Shockwave Player  forum.
