Download/install flash player to Windows 7 - problem

I have a Windows 7 laptop and am trying to update/install flash player. This all seems straightforward until about half way through the download when I am asked to turn off Internet Explorer. I do this but the download refuses to continue, so I never get to do the download/update. I cannot see any way to complete the download. Any suggestions anyone.
