Question

Downloaded Flash Player several times and still doesn't work

A week or so ago I got a virus on my computer. I used Malware Bytes to remove it, and I also have

AVG. I run both of these daily, along with the updates, so maybe they're affecting my ability to use Flash. Ever since the virus, my computer keeps telling me I don't have Flash and that I need to download it. I've downloaded it many times now, but it still appears that I don't have it. I check in Internet Explorer Tools and Addons, and it doesn't even seem to show up in there. I'm using Windows 7. I even tried un-installing and re-installing. If I use Firefox, Flash works, but I prefer to use IE. Any help?

Thanks!

I am having a similar problem.  I run 64-big Windows 7 Home Premium and 32 Bit IE8.  I ran Malware Bytes as well and now my Flash Player has stopped working.  I have followed all of the troubleshooting tips regardin uninstalling and installing.  It is installed and shows up when I use Control Panel to Uninstall Programs, however it is not working.  I checked checked my registry and the kill_bit language is not present so I assume there is nothing to remove.  Any ideas anyone?

Try the following (assuming you have Adobe Flash Player installed): 1)  Restart your computer 2)  Open Internet Options (located in the Control Panel) 3)  Click on the Advanced tab 4)  Click on the Reset button, place a check next to Delete Personal Settings and then click Reset. 5)  Launch Internet Explorer and Flash Player should be properly enabled.

Hi, so I see you are copying and pasting this same thing on this thread also? So is this the "one fix" for all? This that you have posted you just posted on another thread to fix Flash Player/Youtube issues. So now you can fix a Kill-bit/Virus infested computer also? With the same solution? Wow, we were told here that using FF would fix the malady.

Why don't you try reading this thread to actually find out what the problem is before posting your Flash Player/Youtube fix here?

Your "fix" won't fix Flash Player/Youtube issues any more than it will fix the Issues pertaining to this thread.

Yes indeed, my suggested "fix" works! I have a week old "clean install" of

Windows 7 Professional fully updated (including SP1). When I turned on my

computer this morning and reached the desktop, I was greeted with a request

to upgrade Adobe Flash Player v10.1 to v.10.2 which I duly agreed to. A few

hours later, I noticed I could not play videos on YouTube...the view was

just blank with no error message. Knowing I had to have Adobe Flash Player

installed correctly, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it several times. No

luck with opening a video on YouTube. Thinking that my recent install of IE9

RTM could be the problem, I uninstalled it. Still no joy with IE8! I tried

just about every technique I could think of to be assured Adobe Flash Player

was correctly installed and I believed it was. On a lark, I tried the

"Reset Interent Explorer Settings" technique and lo and behold, it worked!

I can now open videos on YouTube all day long!

All I can say is that I stumbled upon this troubleshooting trick and it

worked! I now see that several other Windows users are experiencing the

same issue after upgrading their Flash Player to v10.2. The issue is

definitely with v10.2 and Adobe needs to fix this issue.

    Best regards, Eidnolb!

Are you running this with Mozilla? Or did you? I loved the speed but it was vulnerable to tracking cookies. Windows and Chrome take the Flash here, but they both run slower than the Spring thaw on Mt. Everest. I actually deleted AVG in an attempt to get Adobe to install with Mozilla. I still think the problem is with Adobe not being compatible with Mozilla but I didn't peruse the thread here. Mozilla was golden by not carrying all of the history crap that Windows and Chrome do. Even when I continually clear the browser, dump the load from an hour or so, these other programs are pathetic compared to the previous speed and stability that I got from Mozilla.

I keep "barfing" Adobe Flash" over and over in an attempt to make it work with this superior program. If you guys don't want to fix this, can you at least recommend a flash player that works with Mozilla?

Hi hbwb, So your solution to a Virus infected computer is the Firefox browser? You may want to take the time to read this entire thread first. If FF can perform this miracle, then I'd be all for it.

You might like to try searching the threads back in June of 2010. FF vs 3.6.4 and every other update they brought out had problems with Flash Player, not Flash Player having issues with FF.

I don't mind criticism when it is fairly applied, but blaming Flash Player on every conceivable ill, I'll repsond to with some facts.

One of these facts is that the latest vs of FF, 3.6.15 has issues. I read the Mozilla release notes, so they still have a few things to tweak on this version also.

I tried to update FF to this new release about 2 weeks ago. Result: They updated a "partial" version. Then a day later, a message that since that failed(really?) they would now try to Install a "complete" version.

Bottom line: The computer system and browsers can all have particular problems time to time.

Use the Search Forum for Firefox issues:-)

Hi, I need to mention that before you run that from your Desktop, Close all browsers Windows and then Disable your Anti-Virus.

    You don't want any conflicts.

    Thanks,

Ok, thanks. I tried this a day or so ago and it didn't work, but I'll give it another shot and let you know how it goes.

Just tried this again and it still didn't work. However, I have the free versions of Malwarebytes and AVG, so I don't know that they really disabled. I changed the settings so they wouldn't scan the registry and closed the programs out, but it didn't help. Should I try to manually delete the file in the registry somehow?

Hi Jenna829, I would go back to the Kill-bit site. Go to Post#4 and follow those instructions. #1 thru #6 only. That to me, is the easiest way.

Let me know when you have that done. I know you have already downloaded the zipfile, but it may be more complicated so I would use the one above.

    Let me know.

Hi, just want to make sure I'm going to the right place, etc. Do you mean the Kill Bill site mentioned in the post you refe

rredd to at the top of this thread? I don't want to do anything until I know I'm at the right place. Thanks!

Is this what I need to do?

    Do the following:

    1. open Notepad
    2. select and copy the three (four, if counting the blank line) lines below, then paste them into the Notepad window
    3. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}]
      "Compatibility Flags"=dword:00000000
    4. save the Notepad data as Remove_kill-bit or similar (to the Desktop, or My Documents), then close Notepad
    5. right-click on the saved file, then rename it to Remove_kill-bit.reg

Hi, check to see if you have the Kill-bit set. Viruses can set it and some Anti-Virus programs do. I don't know if AVG does or not.

Thanks. I just tried that... downloaded the Kill-bit removal zip file, but Flash still isn't installed and working. I don't know

    what else to try...

    March 13, 2011

Hi, what did you do after downloading the zipfile? Do you have the Kill-bit set, did you see the Key there where described?

Did you delete it or change the value?
