error message "wrong type for socket" when installing flash player.

Question

Macbook Pro (15 in) with OSX El Capitan Version 10.11.5, Safari 9.1.1.

Received message of new flash update. Proceeded to System Preferences to download. Download went to Downloads file. Closed all open windows including browser. Opened dmg, began download. Got error message as follows "AdobeFlashPlayer_21_a Protocol wrong type for socket".

Trashed dmg, uninstalled FlashPlayer, downloaded from Adobe site, same message. Booted up in safe mode. Shut down, booted normally, still can't download FlashPlayer. Now I have no FlashPlayer and can't download any version.

Help would be appreciated, many thanks. Pat

It's possible the error mounting the DMG is related to the 10.11.5 update. Please see Cannot load DMG files after installing 10.11.5 | Apple Support Communities. A number of people are getting the same error, with various software, when mounting the DMG If none of the suggestions in that forum work for you, contact Apple Support for assistance.

As an alternative, you can also try using the offline installer posted at the bottom of the Installation problems | Flash Player | Mac page, in the 'Still having problems' section, but I suspect it'll exhibit the same behaviour.
