Flash 10.1 slower than Flash 10 on laptop

I picked up an older Dell Inspiron B120 laptop and was really disappointed at how some videos ran in full screen; it was very choppy, almost like a slideshow. I updated my video drivers, toggled the hardware acceleration settings, then finally tried different flash versions. I was using the latest 10.1.53.64 but downgraded to an earlier, archived 10 version whiched work much, much better on my laptop. I'm fine with this despite some security risks but what concerns me is that I'll eventually have to upgrade to 10.1 seeing as how Youtube likes to force you to use recent flash player versions.

Specs:

Windows XP SP3

Intel Celeron-M 1.4 GHz 1 mb cache

Intel 900gml graphics

40 gb HD

Now, I don't expect stuff like h.264 video acceleration on this older machine but I don't expect things to drastically slow down in flash 10.1 either. What's going on here? Also, I'm using the latest video drivers for my chipset.

    I updated the graphics driver.

Uninstalled and re installed flash 10.1 with no luck

    and disabled hardware acceleration.

computer is running windows XP with forced IE7.
