Question

Flash 10.2 not working in Windows 7 IE8 despite 'successful' installation

Hi there,

I downloaded flash player to attempt to view flash media on sites such as bbc website and youtube.

Despite the installation claiming to be successful, I still cannot view video on any sites I have tried.

(bbc website says I don't have the correct version, youtube says I need to upgrade)

My system details are as follows:

Windows 7 Home Premium, 32-bit operating system

Internet Explorer 8.0.7600.16385IC  (it makes no mention of being 64-bit)

Flash Player 10.2.152.26

I have tried following the troubleshooting guides on the adobe website, particularly 'Flash player does not work in Windows 7'

but I have not managed to fix the problem.

I've also gone through several threads on this forum, relating to similar problems, but I'm sorry I haven't been able to fix it.

So far, the stuff I have tried is listed below, but since it has not worked, I assume I have done something incorrectly, missed something,

or I have not yet found the right solution.

The Flash Player does not appear on my programs list, but it does show up in the control panel/list of installed programs.

I don't know how to get flash player to run on its own, so I can't access settings etc. for the hardware acceleration.

The folder located at C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash contains 5 files:

Flash10m.ocx; FlashInstall.log ; FlashUtil10m_ActiveX.dll; FlashUtil10m_ActiveX.exe; install.log

When I visit the adobe page for testing flash player, it does not show me any animation; there is a blank white rectangle with a tiny red 'X' in its top left corner, which I assume should be a box containing the version information if the player had been recognized.

I have looked at the IE8 'tools/Manage Add-Ons - 'show' All Add Ons, and there is no listing of  'Shockwave  Flash Object'

although there is a listing of   'shockwave activeX control' which is enabled.

I've set my IE8 security settings to medium for the categories of 'Trusted Sites' and 'Internet' and I've made sure to set:

  • 'Download Signed ActiveX Controls' to 'Prompt'  and 'Run ActiveX Controls And Plug-ins' to 'Enable'
  • I've tried unintalling the flash player using the specified tool, removing the adobe download tool, and manual re-installation.

Finally, I tried (with much hesitation) to modify the registry key referred to in the Flash-Killer or 'kill-bit' guidlines.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}

The key existed, with a Name: compatibility flags  ; Type: REG_DWORD  ; Data: 0x0000400 (1024)

So I changed the value from 400 to 000 as suggested.

This is not worked either, despite uninstalling flash player, re-booting and re-installing.

Finally, I updated the graphics driver for my ATI RADEON HD 5670 card, but aside from scaring me by drastically altering the screen resolution and not allowing me to roll back the driver, it has unfortunately not solved the flash player problem.

I appreciate that the people with expertise have given loads of help on this problem, I hope I haven't missed something important when following the advice, but I'm pretty stuck, so if anyone can help, I thank you very much.

    thanks,

    pad

      Hello All,

I too have this problem. Can't view Youtube clips and most website catalogs are not accessable. Say "install Adobe Flash player". Which I have done many time.

I have run Malwarebytes, Nortons, MS malicious software removal,MS security to no avail.

I have uninstalled Flash player and insyalled the earlier version Flash player 9r280 and then the latest from Adobe.

If there is a solution please advise me (and the others who have this problem).

      I am using Win 7 64bit

      MS IE8

I has a msg on the IE8 browser about a script running that would stop the browser working; I stopped it.  Alas too late.

From then on the above problems.

      Here's hoping for a solution.

Hi again, Hopefully some of my PC issues have been corrected:-) Now, we are going back to the Kill-bit issue. I had to re-read your first post and then reviewed the others, especially the Post where you reversed your first post on it. I think you had the Kill-bit set, removed it and reset it.

Read this thread as it will explain it better, especially Post#1 & #4.

      Let me know.

      Thanks,

      eidnolb

Don't try Uninstalling/Installing again, just do that test site with IE and see if the animation is now showing. Let me know on that.

      Hi eidnolb,

      thank you for your message.

Yeah, did make some confusion by returning the kill-bit to its original killing value.

And I got a bit confused when I read your post (the 4th post including mine).

"If you followed the info regarding the Kill-bit, then keep whatever change you made.

This will block Flash Player from Installing.......Reboot(restart) your computer after resetting that key."

But I basically decided that you wanted me to make sure the registry value was set to ZERO, to diable the kill-bit, to stop the kill-bit from killing the activeX add-on.

So I set the value to ZERO.

I have confirmed just now, on my registry settings, that the value is set to ZERO (see the screen shot below)

And I checked the registry from my dad's account, and from the ADMINISTRATOR account. the value is the same in each case.

Indeed, I also confirmed that if I change the registry value to 400, FP stops working.

If I set the value again to ZERO to disable the kill-bit, (and re-start IE8) , FP starts working again. (in the ADMINISTRATOR account).

Is it possible that the trouble you were having with the computer systems on your side, means that you did not see my latest messages last night?

      Current Status:

The FP is running perfectly if I use the newly enabled ADMINISTRATOR account, which was hidden up till now.

But if I sign in as my dad, FP does not work, UNLESS I right-click on Internet Explorer and select 'Run as Administrator'.

      thanks eidnolb,

Hi, I did read your other messages, but decided to take care of the Kill-bit issue first, since if that wasn't taken care of, nothing else mattered:-)

Now I'd like you to take a look at this site:

          http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html

Use the Administrator Account that is for your Dad's, not the "hidden" one.

Page down to Advanced Troubleshooting. Follow the steps for Win7. Step #3 is important due to the wording. Depending on the answer, will determine if you need to create
a User Account with Administrative Privileges. Instructions follow for that.

I know that vs9 is still Installed, but until we get this Admin Account info correct we don't want to proceed to the next step.

Sometimes the Administrator Account can become corrupt and another one needs to be created, hence the instructions above for that.

I have the info on the User Account Control, but the above needs taken care of first.

      Thanks,

      eidnolb

Hi, I am going to give you the procedure to follow now, since I'll be out for a bit.

First download and SAVE the FP Uninstaller to your Desktop:

      http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

Next go to this Archived site   http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html     Download the Flash Player 9.0.280 21.8 MB to your Desktop. This is a zipfile.

Look for and extract: Internet Explorer flashplayer9r280_winax.exe and put it on your Desktop.  (1.46 MB)
Download the FP Installer for IE and SAVE to your Desktop:(latest version)
      http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe

Once you have those on your Desktop, Using the Administrator Account, you will CLOSE all browser windows.

Look in your system tray(area near the clock) for any instant messengers, aol, yahoo, etc and Disable them.
Run the Uninstaller and when it is finished, Reboot(restart) your computer.

Run the Installer for vs 9 and when finished, Reboot your computer
Test your browser here and you should be able to see the Flash logo animation(spin) and the version of Flash Player should be listed.
http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ It should be vs 9
Now you will run the Uninstaller again to Uninstall vs 9, when finished, Reboot your computer

Run the Installer for vs 10.2.152.26 and when finished, Reboot your computer.
Then test your browser and you should have vs 10.2.152.26 now Installed. If you can see the Flash logo animation(spin) then most likely you have Shockwave Flash Object in the IE addons, so check that.
You will want to Print these instructions out to make it easier to follow.

Let me know if you have any questions.

      Thanks,

      eidnolb

      Hi eidnolb,

unfortunately, the installation of FP 9.0.280 based on running flashplayer9r280_winax.exe has not worked:

I cannot see the animation / spinning, there is no animation and no box showing the version.

(I have included a partial screenshot in this message, file name flashplayer_test_screenshot.jpg)

Therefore, I did not continue with the instructions.

The control panel list of programs does show 'Adobe Flash Player ActiveX' as being installed, version 9.0.280.0

There were no messenger utilites listed in the system tray.

As you advised, the first thing I did was to modify the {D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000} registry key value from 400 to 000.

After modifying the value by making it Zero, I re-started the computer.

Regarding Administrator Account, I looked on ther 'User Accounts' information, and there is only one user, my dad, and he is listed as Administrator.

Sorry, but I will need to ask for your further advice. In case it is useful, I tried to get a list of all processes that were running on the computer

(in case some of them inhibit the installation. most of them don't mean anything to me, even when they are given a description by the windows 7 Task Manager Processes List - I have pasted the text file below in this post, since I couldnt see how to attach files.)

      thank you for your help,

Hi, I have been trying to post a message for an hour. It doesn't matter if I use XP, Vista, IE8 or any other browser!! This forum started having issues on 2/11/11 and it is slow going getting it fixed.

You mentioned "User Account" which I'm assuming via Start? When you right click on the IE icon in the task bar, do you have "Run as Administrator?

Also using IE8, RIGHT click on the hour & min (clock) and then left click on AdjustDate/Time. Did you receive a message or see the Clock?

Just close it and let me know.

Since vs9 couldn't Install that Shockwave Flash Object just as when Installing the latest version, then that would indicate a Permission problem.

Either the Account used to Uninstall/Install didn't have permission something else is blocking that.

Are you receiving any messages at all from any source?

      Thanks,

      eidnolb

Hi pad2001, Well I must say you have done everything and more in trying to solve this. Nice post:-) Makes my suggestion

much easier and saves a lot of time also, since I don't need to ask for this info.  I need to know what Anti-Virus/Spyware

programs that you are using. Some can block the Install of Flash Player. The procedure I will be giving you has worked for many users with the same issue you are experiencing.

      Let me know that asap.

      Thanks,

      Hi there eidnolb,

thank you so much for replying.

I'm glad my post was suitable, I was worried it would be an information overload, thank you.

My Anti-virus program is Avast 6.0.1000  - a free version for home users.

Actually, it's my dad's PC, so I'm just trying to see what other programs he has, other than Avast which I installed for him.....

According to the Control Panel Security section, Windows Defender is running. (i didn't know about that)

It says "Note: running two or more antispyware programs at the same time can cause your computer to run slowly"

      Windows Firewall is on.

I can't see any other Anti-virus or Anti-spyware programs in the control panel list of installed programs.

Earlier today, I read of one the posts (i think it was yourself) on the similar issue; so I downloaded the FP installer to the desktop, then switched off the firewall and Avast, and tried to install FP. didnt work, But then I read more of the thread from your discussion, and there were many details like messenger programs and stuff in the system tray I had not thought about. Its beyond me. If the installation is being blocked, I don't know the method to get around it, so I really apprecite your help.

One last thing, I had returned the Registry Key Value to its original value of  0x0000400 (1024)  since I didn't really understand what I was doing.

Please could you let me know if I should change it, delete it, etc. ? Is it really a 'killer'?

      thanks very much eidnolb,

      pad2001

      February 24, 2011

Hi, thanks. Avast is ok and so is Windows Defender as I've never known either one to interfere with Installing Flash Player.

You don't want to run more than 1 Anti-Virus(conflicts) but you can run more than one Anti-Spyware programs IF they are compatible.

If you followed the info regarding the Kill-bit, then keep whatever change you made. This will block Flash Player from Installing. We have had a lot of Virus problems and this seems to be part of the issue. Reboot(restart) your computer after resetting that key. There is a procedure to follow to getting Flash Player Installed. The Administrator Account must be used as it gives the permissions needed for the FP Installer to write to the Windows Registry.

Has there been an Virus/Malware infection?

Also in IE addons are there any Anti-Virus addons? I'm sure Avast doesn't add any nor Windows Defender, but check just in case an older Anti-Virus program was used.

      Thanks,

      eidnolb
